In a long flashback, a New York publisher is in Venice pursuing the lost love letters of an early-19th-century poet, Jeffrey Ashton, who disappeared mysteriously. Using a false name, Lewis Venable rents a room from Juliana Bordereau, once Jeffrey Ashton's lover, now an aged recluse. Running the household is Juliana's severe niece, Tina, who mistrusts Venable from the first moment. He realizes all is not right when late one night he finds Tina, her hair unpinned and wild, at the piano. (imdb)

A creepy gothic noir in the vein of Rebecca or The Queen of Spades. It's lovely and creepy at the same time, a story of tormented love and its reverberating echoes that is light on action and heavy on mood and atmosphere. My weakness for these isn't as strong as my weakness for detective noirs, they feel like totally different genres, but I do enjoy them all the same and this one knows how to maintain mystery and uncertainty without overdoing it.

I've yet to see anyone bring so many layers to a often lightweight actor like Robert Cummings. And Susan Hayward photographed lovely with a heart of stone. The mood for this style of picture had really mature post-WWII,
