Is this the JP where the black girl kicks a dinosaur in the face with the power of GYMNASTICS? Or is that the third one? Both suck tremendously, so the point is moot.

My usual base criticism of Spielberg is that he makes products, not films. It's not fair at all. That he despises rough edges doesn't make him any less of an artist than, say, John Carpenter or Robert Altman. Of course, weak Taco Bell collector's cup crap like JP2 does nothing to redeem his ouvre.

"The Lost World" is the much hyped special effects sequel to Spielberg's "other" dinosaur movie, "Jurassic Park". Like its immensely popular predecessor, "The Lost World" is a film about a crazy scientific experiment gone awry, but with a politically-correct 1990's twist. Capitalistic, big business greed is the villain and the whole reason why such an honorable experiment by animal-loving noblemen has such terrible consequences.

Just rewatched, and I find I’ve developed more fondness for it over time. When it came out it certainly felt like lesser Spielberg, but near 25 years later and judged against his filmography from ‘97 to today, it’s solidly 50th percentile Spielberg. A second rate cash-in compared to the original, of course. But some very well-done sequences - Julianne Moore on the glass, T-Rex roaring at the San Diego skyline, raptors overhead through the brush, etc. Cool score too.

It's not actually that bad... but gone are the compelling characters and sense of wonder that made the first movie so special. The action setpieces are entertaining enough but there are so many of them that they have a numbing effect after awhile. Also, as it turns out, Ian Malcolm is nowhere near as entertaining with PTSD.

Everyone always cites the T-Rex exploding out of the ship's hold as the worst part of this movie because it doesn't make any fucking sense. Seeing as that's the only part I actually remember, I would argue that it's the best part.

For all the movie's flaws, and there are many, it's biggest sin is being the follow-up to Jurassic Park. Disappointing sequels are typically met with crushing resentment, but this movie isn't half as bad as most make it out to be. Unnecessary and stupid, sure, but it's still entertaining. Side-story: One of the most shameful moments of my movie-going life was walking out of Peter Jackson's King Kong and hearing someone unironically say "Man, they ripped off Lost World so badly." .....wow.

I'm sure the first book was more interesting than the second one, but The Lost World: Jurassic Park doesn't ever get boring and the story could have been MUCH worse for what it was. Goldblum did fine. Lacks a lot of spirit the first film had, but it's not too bad. I will also admit that there were quite a few flaws and unnecessary scenes though.

Also 5 bonus points for gymnastic kick, it made me realize that world needs some kung fu vs dinosaurs films.

Not terrible for a sequel. It doesn't come anywhere near to how awesome the first one is, but still has it's own merits. Goldbloom and Moore are good but no one else really stands out. When they were on the island it was a lot like the first Jurassic Park and was were the film had it's best moments. Too bad about a third of this movie had a lot of off island scenes that were rather lame. The King Kong/Godzilla reference that most of the ending turned out to be was way too cheesy.

It's hard to believe Spielberg directed this. Jurassic Park is really solid, but this is kind of a mess. There are some good actors, but they're not given much to work with. Bad, cheesy dialogue. The gymnastics scene is so awful. The last act is ludicrous. Way too many plot holes and a lack of logic. If it weren't for a few cool scenes, some nice effects, its connection to the first film and dinosaurs being awesome, I wouldn't like this much at all.

Problematic. Special Effects fantastic; litte else. Characters overly numerous and underdeveloped. Smug and halfbaked eco-message. The heroes commit a form of eco-terrorism at one point; releasing some captive dinosaurs. The script leaves them blameless; the dinosaurs kill some redshirts, who cares about those guys, right? Major plot holes. Characters are idiots as well as jerks. Skip it, unless you're only there for the effects.

While it has a few (few!) legitimately exciting scenes, this sequel is mostly devoid of the charm, character, wonder, or attention to detail from the first film. Instead, scripting and direction seem phoned in and sloppy. The "heroes" are unbelievably stupid and/or hypocritical and no reflection is had upon their incredibly poor decisions that are the cause of all the carnage and death. I root for the dinosaurs.

The first Jurassic Park presented a novel movie monster and one of the parts it excelled at is portraying them in both an awe-inspiring and terrifying manner. I'm not sure if the same could have been done in Lost World, since the audience has already seen realistic dinosaurs on screen, and the film goes full-on into the CG and generic action direction (which is done well - there's just not as much variety). The characters (particularly kids and "villain" types) aren't as sympathetic as the first

The Bus set-piece alone makes this worth watching, and credit where it's due, Koepp's writes witty dialogue (especially when it comes out of the mouth of a laconic Goldblum). But in the end the sheer volume of narrative short cuts for the sake of pacing and accumulated breaches in logic tips it over the cliff.

I think sequels are the only weakness to Steven Spielberg. I wasn't very impressed with the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull. I think some people loved this film basically because of the visuals and action scenes. Hollywood needs to understand that visuals do not tell the story, the screenplay does, as well as the director who translates it. I guess Michael Chricton, author of The Lost World, is somewhat to blame. The actors weren't great, in fact terrible. Story wasn't structured. It just sucked.

It was unlikely ever to be as good as the original, but it's as though Spielberg didn't even try. The first two thirds are watchable enough, ruined only slightly by inappropriate attempts at humour and needlessly cheesy one-liners. The final act is pure dreck, though; it brutally hammers the point raised more subtley in the first two acts and flushes down any plausibility that may still have been circling the drain. 65% for the first two acts and 20% for the last one.
