It has a certain elegance, and a great performance by Kinuyo Tanaka. But I was fairly underwhelmed, and had hoped for better. I know it's based on a true story, but I didn't find it nearly as compelling as Mizoguchi at his best.

Was it me, or was Kinuyo Tanaka hamming it up as the actress in center of all the problems? Especially when doing the western plays. Perhaps a deliberate take, as acting tend to be broader across the ocean. Regardless of it feeling a little bit different than your usual Japanese drama, it didn't come fully convince me. Does have its moments. It was a Kenji Mizoguchi after all. But I won't class it as one of his better works.
