Peter Jackson's new dissatisfactory film, The Lovely Bones is an unexpected letdown. Although the actors are all good, they struggle to cope with the insufficient script just as Jackson struggles incommensurately to balance imagination from authenticity and realism in his big budget. The film tried to be emotive and percipient, but wounded up feeling preachy. One of my most awaited films of the year, of which I put all my hopes into, have been crushed.

And the award for the most disappointing film of the year goes to... Tucci and Imperioli aside, all the characters were laughably flat and forgettable, as were the performances (especially Whalberg as the justice seeking dad). It also suffers from piss-poor direction and a distracting soundtrack, and I was, sadly enough, never immersed in Jackson's spiritless 'in-between' world. He races to the finish line as fast as possible, hoping any shortcomings will go unnoticed. A very boring experience.

Stunning. Haunting. Moving. But - sadly - only in glimpse. As a whole Jackson's version of Sebold's unforgettable and well-balanced tale feels rushed, uneven and unfocused. Worth seeing for the magnificent performances of Ronan and Tucci, though.

Seeing the brilliant Stanley Tucci through a doll house shows that Peter Jackson was doing the best he could with his camera. Story wise it felt like there were just the bare bones to work with here. While a lot of the editing was swiftly done and looked as pretty as the special effects - overall some scenes felt they could of been done without and just not where they should be.

Some of the worst writing ever. I mean, I heard the book was terribly written but holy shit it was awful. Everytime Suzie starts doing voice over narration I wanted to kill myself. Some of the corniest, cheesiest shit I've heard. By the end it just became grating. Plus the killer's death is completely unsatisfying and incredibly lame. Nice to see Michael Imperioli get some work but this movie blew ass. If anything it just confirms what I already knew: Peter Jackson = overrated.

In many ways a completely horrendous film. The casting exemplifies this perfectly: A 30-year-old looking, Indian man is supposed to be the love interest of Saoirse Ronan, who at most looks 13 years old. Come on! Not to mention Ronan's in the film 'little sister', who obviously outages Ronan by far. The whole thing reeks of incredibility, so one can't help but distance oneself from the film and several scenes become involuntarily funny. Tucci isn't that good, and Wahlberg is once again terrible.

The middle section was unfathomably slow. I particularly hated the Sarandon montage. Jackson's film is a terrible let-down, both script-wise (it would have benefited from doing away with "the in-between" altogether) and in terms of direction. I wouldn't write him off completely, though. The suspense elements in turn made me squirm in my seat and pushed me to the edge of it, Tucci and Ronan nailing their big scene. What the movie lacks is finesse. Grasping for profundity, it ends up a dull mess.

Other than Tucci and Ronan, this movie really has no other strong points. I do not understand why this book was given a film adaptation. Brian Eno was a wonderful choice for the soundtrack however.

I have absolutely NO idea what Jackson tries to achieve in this bizarre (and extremely uninspired) blend of new age hippie-nonsense, suspense-thriller, photoshop-visuals and 70s-nostalgia. Impressive that so much talent can make something so incredibly dull...

This was way more intense that I anticipated. But except the fact that there were too many CGI scenes and the movie lost its tempo in the middle (luckily, it regained it in the end) there's not much to criticize. It gave me the chills, and (although I haven't read the book) the whole story/acting was really top knotch. Jackson did it with interesting scenes that make you wonder - think about it, you don't even see the murder! A sad movie that grabs you deeply.

This has the prettiest depiction of the raping of a young girl I have ever seen. Rape on film though, is not supposed to be pretty. And that is probably the major flaw of this movie: It's too pretty. Also, the reworking from novel to film is awful. Stanley Tucci is great though but he alone cannot rescue this from what it is: a rape-revenge film without rape and without revenge.

Unpleasantly wrong-headed take on admittedly difficult material is an overindulgent mess; cloying fantasy scenes in purgatory clash uneasily with the earthbound sequences which do a reasonable job dealing with the grieving family, bizarre digressions and interludes aside (Sarandon's Mrs Doubtfire musical sequence is the most tonally peculiar). Tucci's transformative performance is arguably the highlight, but even he is burdened with a garish make-up job which renders the character unconvincing.

The first part of the film is really promising. Ronan is so beautiful, has a lot of charisma and the performance of Tucci is absolutely overwhelming. The rest of the movie is mediocre to forgettable as is the story. The depiction of Suzie's in-between-world and all other visual effects are great but does not catch up with all the flaws. The ending is a very bad deus ex machina one. Very disappointing. Pity.

It's decent until the girl's death, and then Peter Jackson, helped by a clumsy editing and poor script, gets himself trapped in a storytelling that goes nowhere and which is absolutely exaggerated and sickening.

I don't know if there's ever been a film that fell so bizarrely short of expectations. Everything besides Ronan's soulful performance (Tucci's otherwise compelling work is ruined by Jackson horribly overdirecting him at all times) is completely off; the wild swerving between tones, the wasted cast, the bewilderingly ugly imagery, and Jackson completely missing what should have been the point. We could have had another "Heavenly Creatures" but I don't know what the hell this is.

Awful. Peter Jackson's worst film by a mile. But then the book was terrible also so he didn't have much to work with. The unnecessary CGI was perhaps to detract from the flaccid script and uninspired direction, but it just didn't work.

There are actually two different stories going on in Lovely Bones. The first is that of Susie's death; the other is about her afterlife. Both are told at the same time. The afterlife story is such an immense undertaking, it's a bit convoluted and boring. But, it's easily overlooked due to the masterful direction of the story of her death. It's a shame that the Academy Awards overlook actors in movies like this; Tucci is more than deserving of an award for his portrayal of a sleazy pedophile.

Far better than the hyperbolized accounts being published on this site and by critics. Granted I never read the book, but Jackson creates a beautiful dreamscape and a reasonable compelling drama as a family torn from asunder attempts to heal from the devastating, brutal murder of its oldest daughter while attempting to solve her murder. Worth a watch.

Jackson is simply not a good filmmaker. But at least he learns us, that between heaven and earth is place of poorly made CGI. A capable scriptwriter and a great visual director like Fincher or Tarsem Singh could have used this budget and theese actors to make this a truly great film.

I am not familiar with the book, but I have heard the reviews of this film, which pretty much convinced me not to see it. Just to see Stanley Tucci's performance I watched the film online. Maybe it was my low expectations but I was pleasantly surprised by this movie. I think the critics may have sold it short (though I have a weakness for peter jackson - I was one of the few who really enjoyed King Kong). There is a lot of good acting here and it is a flawed but touching movie.

I'm a fan of pretty much everyone involved with this one, which makes its utter failure at suspense, sadness and intrigue all the more sad. Jackson tries to make the afterlife beautiful and impossible, but it just feels majorly excessive, especially compared to A) the book and B) the real-world half of the film. All of the acting is poor, too, save Ronan (misguided but decent) and Tucci (who can disappear into any role).

The Lovely Bones is an overlong, inconsistent, poorly characterized film that also left me confused about what it felt about the murder of a 14-year-old girl. Is it worth your time? I don't believe it is whatsoever, save for thirty minutes where it gets kind of tense and a genuinely creepy performance from Stanley Tucci. But most of the film is a mess and doesn't deserve your 135 minutes. The PG-13 rating means that possibly heavy material is dumbed down, leaving the film without much weight.

I'm kinda surprised how much I disliked this. Jackson plays the plot like a genre movie, with all the attendant clichés, but it's quite clearly not, so he ends up not only with stupid, annoying characters doing stupid, annoying things, but also no plot payoffs, no tension, and no sense of purpose. It listlessly transitions from slow-motion portent to slow-motion sentimentality, and then kind of ends with a shrug like it forgot what it was talking about. (I could go on but I've run out of space.)

The beginning of this movie is decent but as it progresses it gets slower and slower until around the middle the low-point in boredom is reached. The visuals were probably actually great, but the random heaven sequences were so arbitrary and untethered to the action that their beauty angered me all the more, since they were so wasted. It seems like a fascinating idea that just couldn't decide how it wanted to play out. Or that was just horribly lost in translation. Tucci is terrifying, and the rest of the leads at least aren't annoying.

It started so well. It started as a very interesting and thoughtful examination of guilt, spirituality and the afterlife through a personal drama. By the end, however, every character had lost 20 IQ points and the viewer is repeatedly punched in the belly with sentimentality and cloying, cliched, heavy-handed shoe-gazing faux poignancy that it just vomits all over what is a very fine premise. Has inspired me to go and read the book, but I wouldn't recommend it as a piece of cinema.

This is really not very good. Probably the best example out there of how voice-over narration can ruin a movie, with Saoirse Ronan unnecessarily explaining much of the action you can plainly see on the screen. Stanley Tucci's performance is really good, but for the most part this is just a really weak, disappointing film. They should have put the script through several more rewrites.

A few good sequences aside, this movie is awful. A lack of focus makes it feel as stuck as Susie, in an in-between world without purpose. The afterlife bits are pretty but pointless, and the real world scenes ruined by Wahlberg, carrying on where he left off in the Happening. Sarandon and Weisz are completely wasted, with no character arcs to speak of, and only Tucci is allowed to shine. 'I was here for a moment, and then I was gone' chirps our dead protagonist. It felt like a fucking eternity.

Peter Jackson brings imagination and visionary cinematography to life in the Lovely Bones. Despite the fact that this a beautiful and touching film, there just isnt enough plot in it to justify its own runtime. The film starts to drag and veer off course early on and diminishes the world around it. With more of an adaptive screenplay, something truly exciting could have been achieved here. Jackson's work is still worth seeing the film, just not the admission ticket.

The first act of the film is amazing. Great acting on all parts. Incredible cinematography. A steady sense of uneasiness mixed with a hint of nostalgia. However, once the story starts to progress and evolve, it begins to completely dismantle. It dwells on certain scenes and topics too much and beats them to death. The visuals get absolutley out of control. And the conclusion feels so completely unsatisfying and not befitting the entire tone and direction of the story.

A strong emotional core, admirable performances by Ronan and Tucci, and fantastic visuals can't make up for an overall illogical narrative, obnoxious editing, inconsistent world-building, and a completely unfocused tone. It rarely manages to be suspenseful or cathartic, and when it is, never to the degree it deserved to be. Overlong, choppy, and at some moments downright forced, this could have been so much more than just a pretty-looking, somewhat dark film about death and closure.

Interesting enough and well directed at times but you get the feeling TLB's 'different' vibe is due to the fact it never really knows what type of film it wants to be. A good and at sometimes a masterful creation of Alice Sebold's novel. Ronan and Tucci give tour-de-force performances and the visual effects were breathtaking but it lacked a certain quality and overall feel that Jackson had during Lord of the Rings. The script is also at some times very poor and not well thought out but in the end, the powerful performances and the visual effects are the things to look at. A mixed-bag of a film: The plot leading up Suzy's murder is full of wonderfully uncomfortable edge-of-your-seat suspense, and the emotion and drama that follow her death in dealing with the loss and looking for the killer is just as captivating, and is captured by excellent camerawork and great performances all around. The mystical afterlife scenes, however, feel fluffy and boring in comparison with the gritty suspense of the scenes on earth. Overall, a good movie that could have been great.

I review this based on being a fan of the book. As always, the book is better, but that's not why I didn't like it that much. They focused too much on the in-between and not enough on the struggle the family was enduring. They also left out a crucial relationship that develops between the mother and the detective. Casting and acting were great, so it's too bad they ruined the movie.

Even if it is quite artistic, I found the fantasy CGI parts of this film far inferior to the real life parts. I'm not slating Weta's CGI, it's just that real stuff is inherently more satisfying to gaze at than whatever sunset or cornfield or pagoda you can dream up. That aside, the film's foregone-conclusion narrative failed to captivate me and the whole thing was rather dull with poor characterisation and acting. I'd venture to say that Jackson & co adapted all the wrong aspects of the book.

Jackson cuts off human characters in favor of visual excess. I'm not sure what to take away from his movie. If I was meant to be captivated by Susie's journey beyond the grave, then I'm left unengaged. Jackson's version of Heaven, while a culmination of raw technology efforts, feels desolate and lonely. I can't say the movie didn't impact me--it sure startled me, and stirred up emotions, but its protagonists did not, leaving a gaping emptiness all the special effects in the world can't fill.

Apart from the scenes involving the brilliantly chilling Tucci, this was quite the disappointment. For matters of such turmoil it often feels haphazard, unaided by a series of bland performances backed only by a series of cringe-worthy narration, rambling script and one thoroughly terrible excuse for an ending. Even though I'm not a fan of Peter Jackson's work I was looking forward to this 'quiet drama, his pet project' blah blah. It turns out it's just as self-indulgent as his other work. The movie trots along at a snails pace with the director throwing in weird and crappy special effects every chance he gets. The story is forgettable and nowhere near any classics of the genre. Even the usually good Stanley Tucci is very bland as 'The Villain'. Stay clear.

I found exactly what i expected from PJ. He has adapted The Lovely Bones in the same fashion as he did The Lord of The Rings , except this time people acknowledged that this adaption was a failure. I'm glad this time my friends did not tought that PJ was the only director who could pull this one off and no one could adapt it better. It was visually far behind "What dreams may come" and the actors/actresses did their best with the script.
