The narration often falls into fawning and description of what's on screen, but Tavernier still manages to construct a wider picture of the Lumiere brothers work. There's just enough context to make this interesting and my appreciation for some of the films really grew.

It's a nice representative cross section of what the Lumières' films were all about. Tavernier is a likable presenter, and he's right in emphasizing the quality of composition (using the diagonal, multiple planes, etc.) as one of the things that often stands out compared to other early films.
