The Mad Miss Manton

So odd to see Barbara Stanwyck in a murderous screwball comedy like this! Kinda dumb and not always perfect comic timing, but lots of comedy gold anyway! Especially with the one-liners! Henry Fonda falls head over heels for Stanwyck which starts a beautiful love/hate relationship between the lower class newspaper man and the upper-class dame as they stumble their way over corpses and near-assassinations. The Mad Miss Manton is not a natural Stanwyck role which makes it part of the appeal.

Not great, but good-natured fun. Stanwyck's presence means it's worth watching, of course.

Pretty silly, even by screwball comedy standards.

Fonda's miscast and is surprisingly unlikable. But otherwise, it's OK with plenty of fun moments. Nowhere near as good as the Stanwyck/Fonda pairing in The Lady Eve.
