Some points for audacity, but if Branagh is trying to prove that love is stronger than the horrors of war, he fails miserably. I can't think of a worse setting for magic than the death, mud, rats and open latrines of a WWI trench. It's a perverse, even tasteless, choice.

There's not many opera's in film industry and usually they go under the radar. This one is quite good at being opera but not so being a movie. If you are familiar with plot, then it's ok otherwise not. Overture is too short(Mozart didn't realise this could be a problem)and beside trench warfare we don't know anything at start. I really like actors, who can sing properly and WW I theme. Just like Mamma Mia! enraptures Abba fans, this could be great for Mozart fans. And I'm one of them.

Branagh butching my favorite Mozart opera is a strange and somehow sad experience, but at least it's still an option to close the eyes and enjoy the most beautiful music ever written.
