The Brenner/McQueen/Bronson combo is the pinnacle of easy, confident 60s masculine cool, and the movie just has a pleasant vibe - easy to understand its ubiquitous TV presence - and, drawing from Kurosawa, a good story. I found a few of the titular seven a bit underdeveloped and there's nothing too mindblowing about the action climax - to be honest the 2016 remake probably outdoes it there - but overall a rightful classic that any Western DVD collection looks naked without.

Although it is extremely long, it is an incredible western, and it's based on the incredible Seven Samurai. The cast is made up of many of the greatest actors of the time, and the story is terrific. It's a story of heroes, and that's always fun. The Magnificent Seven is a film to never be forgotten. Awesome!

As far as remakes goes, this is one of the best and considering the source material being 'Seven Samurai', classic status is a formality. The ensemble cast and score are of the best ever. Cowboys are different from Samurais but both for different reasons become terrific movies.

Solidified Yul Brynner's legend, Eli Wallach's stardom, made Steve McQueen a film star, established a couple other future film legends (Bronson, Coburn) & a future TV star (Vaughn). And can you really recall any other American western film score with such ease as this one?

Pleasantly entertaining if a tad light. Seven characters is probably too many to try to flesh out in less than 3 hours unless you're John Ford. Still, several stars prove why they're iconic, from Brynner's wise hero to McQueen's stoic badass. The highlight is easily the action, filmed in almost a tapestry-like fashion, with plenty of wide angles to allow the action to progress without cutting about. I'm not sure if it's because of Sturges or Charles Lang, or both, but it's some memorable stuff.

Can't add something new so I'll say that it's not better than Seven Samurai. It has a nice story and actors like Steve McQueen can do no harm. But it doesn't pack a considerable punch and feels wholly inconsequential when compared to Kurosawa's epic or even later films in the genre.

A pretty slow moving western that, aside from slight goings-on in the begining, saves all the action for the end. The acting ranges from decent to terrible, and the movie itself was fairly well written. The music is way too stereotypical for a western for this to be taken seriously, not to mention that there are much better westerns out there--and not even made by Americans.

The democratizing nature of firearms leaves the film without easy justification for the peasants' inability to fight back which leads to unintentional racism. There's also too many concessions to western (the genre, not the culture. 7 Samurai was very western, but it wasn't a western) convention. It's still a great movie, and funny to me because of all the hate it gets just for being a remake of a contemporary film. Apparently it caught shit for that in 1960 as well. Lazy criticism is timeless.

It drags a bit in its first hour or so -- mainly because of Brynner's plain acting --, but the beautiful score manages to keep things going, as well as the well-shot set-pieces of the last 30 minutes and the amount of inspirational, but classic speeches -- Bronson saying they (the seven) are the cowards, that the farmers are the true heroes; the farmers helping the seven with work instruments is pure American spirit of not settling against injustice; Bronson and Coburn's death scenes are aces.

Remaking the Seven Samurai as a western was a pretty brilliant move, too bad that a lot of heart seemed to be lost in the translation. While the Seven are pretty well cast, the characters never really come alive or interact with each other, making some of the reveals fall very flat. Mifune's amazing monologue from the original is now almost an afterthought, delivered without gravitas. The concept of seven noble, white men saving helpless Mexicans is also kinda... awkward, to say the least.

I'm slightly wary of remakes in general, but this is a prime example of how to do it right. Sturges brilliantly recontextualizes the story as a Western, keeping certain elements completely intact and rejiggering as he sees fit. What I really liked was the increased focus on the villain, which not only fits the Western genre more, but gives the delightful Eli Wallach some time to shine. The widescreen color photography is wonderful, and the Bernstein score is one of the best I've ever heard.

It may have a grand reputation and universally acclaimed source material, but this western is more sturdy than sublime. It still reverberates with the grandness of a bygone studio era when pricey sweep was regularly applied to pulpy storytelling. There are ample shootouts and standoffs, and the turning points are accompanied by clear pronouncements from the characters about where the story is heading next. It's straightforwardly entertaining, the sort of movie that popcorn was invented for.

It lacks the charm of 7 Samurai and somehow Hired Guns and Peasants waxing poetic does not work as well as in an Edo-era setting. The extras are awful, and so are the showdown sequences. The star-studded ensemble delivers though (I realized that I have never seen Brunson young, he was handsome). Wallach and McQueen have unreal stage presence and the emblematic music is really something else. So, I fell it is a bit overrated but it is a good movie overall

When you have a good cast it's great. When you have a script and story just as good it becomes a wonderful movie (and ends up on my list). A small village hires seven gunmen led by Yul Brynner and Steve McQueen to battle outlaws terrorizing the village. Oh, and did I mention the theme song (a beloved MHS band "stand tune")?

If the conflicts between the villagers and warriors in Seven Samurai add depth to the film here they just make the film seem like it is straining itself for depth. Similarly some of the scenes in Seven Samurai that add to characterisation or whatnot here just seem cheesy - compare the scenes of the respective groups of warriors handing their food to the villagers to see what I mean.

It's a fun movie, and there is a certain chemistry between the charismatic leads (amongst The Seven, and including Eli Wallach) that makes this highly enjoyable. The Bernstein score is, of course, fantastic. Unfortunately, scenes like the "We never win" speech end up highlighting the weaknesses of this in comparison to Seven Samurai.

On the importance and widespread attainability of heroism. Also, its difficulty. No, being a hero not as easy as just puffing your chest out. The movie creates complex human characters rather than more simplistic western myths to throw on the pile. And yes, its in your face adventure score was probably the best of its kind until John Williams came along.

By far the most entertaining Western I've ever seen (a genre I generally avoid like the plague), mostly because it's not actually about shoot-'em-up cowboys, but larger moral questions. It stays light, though - the creative forces involved managed to take one of the greatest movies of all time and turn it into breezy entertainment, for better or worse - and the cast is excellent (plus, Yul Brynner is at his peak of hotness here).

For whatever reason I always put off watching famous Westerns and yet I always end up liking them more than I would have expected going in. This one is no exception, showing both humor and the ability to be a wonderful adaptation of Seven Samurai. It makes sense due with the parallels of the two cultures. The theme is legendary.

Enjoyable action in the later parts, lacks a certain flow gathering the group in the beginning. It's weird seeing a movie remake nowadays that actually took considerable thought and effort on the part of the creators. It actually feels like they were trying to pay homage to Seven Samurai, not just cash in on a recognizable name. And a thought occurred to me in the opening credits of this movie... It's rare now for movies to say "This is based on X film." Instead they just give it the exact same title like they're replacing it with a new and improved version.

It pales in comparison to Seven Samurai, particularly in parts that are more or less direct references to that movie but less effectively rendered, but there's enough originality and recreation here to breathe life into the picture. There are some aspects that are too "Hollywood" for my tastes, but it remains (at times, surprisingly) true to the original.

Just when you think it's starting to build up a head of steam, Sturges invariably punctures the tension with some sentimental guff involving Bronson and those three annoying kids or Buccholz and his new girlfriend. There are some exciting sequences, though, and the music by Elmer Bernstein is deserving of its reputation as a classic.

Watching Seven Samurai, it's hard not to get annoyed by all the screaming and whiny peasants, but when I finally got around to watching this version of the same story I found I missed the energy of those peasants. The Seven themselves are likable enough, particularly McQueen, Bronson, and Brynner, but their motivation seems superficial, and the peasants are a lifeless, pathetic bunch.

It's a great mainstream western of the period. It does some things better, like fleshing out the bandit leader into a full character embodied by Eli Wallach auditioning for "The Good, the Bad & the Ugly". John Sturges can certainly stage action and Elmer Bernstein summons an amazing score.

This movie is probably the most well known remake of the original Akira Kurosawa film and actually manages to not be terrible. Actually, this is probably one of the finest westerns I've seen with great actors such as Steve McQueen and Charles Bronson. Unfortunately, this movie may be just a little to short. Which is the exact opposite of my quibble with the original, I didn't think the characters had much time to breath. Still a classic, however.

The Mexican villagers, the girl especially, are portrayed as groveling dogs, a device for glorifying the "Magnificent" white men who treat the the poor farmers with gracious paternalism. Despite its old-school bigotry, it's an exciting movie with a great cast and memorable music, and I can see why it became a classic.

I guess THE SEVEN SAMURAI is the better film, but this version has charms of its own. The cast! The music! The action! It does show that Hollywood doesn't always have to make a hash of foreign film remakes.

To my great shame, I have still not seen Seven Samurai. If this is not in the same league as Samurai than when I do see Kurosawa's classic I must be in for a real treat. This is fantastic by itself and all of the characters are interesting, the story is tight, and the score, my God, the score. This film made me reevaluate whether Bernstein is actually the best film composer of all time.
