Ultimately, this movie is probably inferior to a decent movie version of the story it draws on. But since this great story has been done so many times, the concept of presenting it in a different way was somewhat refreshing. Still, I wanted more of the play and less of Dickens. Well made, but not one I'll revisit.

Not only a chapter out of Dickens' life, but a rather original take on one of his most well-known stories. Dan Stevens and Christopher Plummer both give grade A performances. The film goes a bit heavy on the tie-ins to its source material, but feels just as heartfelt as any other time you've heard the tale.

Since its arrival in late 1843, A Christmas Carol has become a holiday favorite the world over in its myriad retellings. (You can check out our reviews, for instance, of the 2010 version starring Jim Carrey here and 1993's The Muppet Christmas Carol here). This new adaptation is a bit different, however, offering something akin to an "origin story" for the famous tale we already know so well.

Fails to fully take advantage of either of its conceits (paralleling Dickens with Scrooge and his writing experience with the plot of "A Christmas Carol"), meaning the payoff is not as powerful as it could have been, but still a pleasant and engaging little biographical fable well shot and performed.
