I love movies from the handful of years just before the Production Code--so different in their perspective. Even just a few years later, a movie with this sort of thoughtful mood would be impossible. George Arliss gives a well-seasoned performance--he played this role on stage and in a silent version 10 years earlier, so there's very little spontaneous about this one. It took Hollywood a few years to figure out what to do with Bette Davis...she's good, but never was the ingenue type.

BlurayRip R.A.R.B.G.

Wow okay that was actually good?? Honestly I wasn’t expecting much but I really enjoyed it, very solid story and characters, George Arliss is a quite good actor and I liked that he didn’t end up with the young lady, they are clearly better as friends

Arliss is delightful in his role. This is no doubt his film and he dominants the screen in his calm gentleman demeanor. He might have two stunning beauties playing opposite of him, in Violet Heming making a rare film appearance and a young Bette Davis in her first role for Warner Bros after being dumped by Universal, but all eyes is on the old man. Arliss knew his role well having played it on stage and also in the silent version from 1922 and felt right at home doing it again.
