1955
Western, Mystery
1h 43m
Mysterious Will Lockhart delivers supplies to storekeeper Barbara Waggoman at Coronado, an isolated town in Apache country. Before long, he's tangled with Dave Waggoman, vicious son of autocratic rancher Alec and cousin of sweet Barbara. But he sticks around town, his presence a catalyst for changes in people's lives, searching for someone he doesn't know...who's been selling rifles to the Apaches. (imdb)

There's some pretty dark violence here, reminiscent of The Searchers even though this preceded it by one year. I didn't enjoy it though; Stewart's reason for coming from Laramie seems really vague throughout the film and then when he finds who he's looking for, it seems 100% coincidental. And outside of Stewart, I felt the acting overall was pretty atrocious.

The storyline is very well put together, clips along nicely and has some gripping drama. The problems that Stewart faces are compelling, and the resolutions are satisfying. Lovely widescreen color photography. The film seems to have a racist bent at first glance, but reveals a more enlightened viewpoint on further reflection. A fine cast of characters, I especially enjoyed the hell out of Aline MacMahon as the spunky ranch owner Kate. A really solid and enjoyable movie.

First, I think this succeeds far better than the other Mann/Stewart Westerns I've seen because Lockhart is still a vengeful protagonist, but he also has a calm vulnerability that appears far more frequently than before and makes him a lot more interesting. The early Cinemascope panoramas of New Mexico are gorgeously vast. Another way it blazes trails is with its villain, who doesn't really feel as such by the film's end. All in all, I think this is necessary viewing within the Western canon.

The director must have been pissed that all these community theater losers kept wandering into his gorgeous landscape panoramas. The even-bad-for-the-50's acting, cheesy good guys and a few giant plotholes have successfully conspired to make Patton Oswalt a liar. A dirty cattle rustling liar. It's not bad though, it's honestly captivating, entertaining, not racist and visually appealing, just really flawed.

Pretty solid Western that makes up for a somewhat thin plot with strong execution. The performances are pretty good and the way things are slowly but steadily revealed makes for great tension.

One of the great collaborations between Mann and Stewart, this film draws the lone hero into a tangled web of inbred family darkness. But of course, even the hero has shady and less-than-honorable motives. No one is above reproach here (except maybe the women), and no one seems willing or able to remove themselves from the ever-darkening circumstances. Mann's camera underlines the off-kilter relations of the people with its sharp angles, while the wide shots only heighten the people's isolation.

I didn't get bored even for a moment.I t's different from Leone's westerns, which I use to like better but even so it's undoubtely a preety good one. The best Mann I've seen so far.

One of the better American westerns but there were a number of unanswered questions that would knock this out of my top tier. Definitely worth a watch though as it's full of deep, sketchy characters.

Not as strong as the earlier Mann/Stewart westerns, but still very enjoyable. Hilariously bad theme song, too!

This one's all about Arthur Kennedy. Almost everything that's great about this movie involves Arthur Kennedy/Arthur Kennedy's character in some way.

Though not quite as great as "Winchester '73" and "The Naked Spur", this is still a very good western. I always like Stewart a lot, but it's the script and MacMahon's character that elevates this one.

It is evident this Columbia picture was adapted from a literary source, in this case a serial, notably due to the character depictions on screen. Each of the main characters - probably with the exception of Dave - was superbly cast and enacted in a way that enlivens their personality. James Stewart is great with his drawl and his character of a bygone era when morality still meant something. A very entertaining plot from beginning to end, and gorgeous picturesque CinemaScope cinematography.

This noirish western feels like it's going around in circles a few times, but eventually it pulls together. There are a few undeveloped storylines; stick in a few more panoramic shots of the Old West and I'd watch this for another hour or so.

my favourite of the mann-stewart collabs largely because it's also my new favourite shakespeare adaptation, striking dead centre the sweet spot between personal and mythic. kennedy's great yet on-the-nose coinflip of stewart in BEND OF THE RIVER is perfected here into a multi-dimensional tragic villain who undeniably steals the movie (for mann's most fascinating and affecting stewart, see THE NAKED SPUR).

A very fine, well put together western collaboration between frequent collaborators Mann and Stewart. Stewart's character is interesting and Kennedy is good as well. Just a very solid movie. The first hour is a bit on the slow side at times but it picks up nicely.
