To study a rogue planet heading for a near-miss with Earth, Prof. Elliot sets up an observatory on the foggy moors of a remote Scottish island, with his pretty daughter and Dr. Mears, a former student with a shady past. Soon after arrival of reporter John Lawrence, a ship from Planet X just happens to land near the observatory. Is the visitor (who actually looks alien) benevolent? What are Mears' real motives for trying to communicate with it? (imdb)

This film does such a great job raising ethical issues that I just wish it had more time to explore and properly resolve them. The ending passed by in a little over the blink of an eye. Anyway, this film has some great use of ambient noise. The alien has a unique presence; his impassive visage, almost always lit with low-key lighting, wonderfully conveys the ambiguity of the character. It all looks fake and fairly cheesy, but it still remains interesting.

Goofy, harmless, old school sci-fi.

Great on atmosphere and direction, but the plot is really stupid.

Ulmer can't do anything much better than the average post-war sci-fi film, but he presents the WEIRDEST -- hey, I'm just going with the poster -- alien of all time.

O homem do Planeta X de Edgar G. Ulmer tinha sua premiere em São Francisco há exatos 70 anos. https://letterboxd.com/ladyspiggott/film/the-man-from-planet-x/

I enjoyed this one even though I didn't find much distinguishable about it (other than the memorable alien and his costume), and the science doesn't even try to make any sense. Can a planet come hurtling through the solar system without any real impact (other than "hurricanes" and other relatively minor phenomena) on the Earth? Still, the acting was pretty good, and its message does resonate at the end of the film. Worth a viewing for sure.

A lot of it's excellent, especially the simplistic yet highly effective sound design. However, it drags a lot despite how short it is. There's parts that are exciting and parts that are poignant ("If only I were not so helpless against the voiceless threat of the unknown"), but a lot of feet dragging as well.

Modest budget average sci-fi thriller, mercifully short, to the point and even a bit atmospheric; a nice bit of fun that should suffice its intended audience.

Might be a economical approach by Edgar G. Ulmer, but alien looking aliens are finally taking over the screen! And that made The Man from Planet X (1951) unique in the recently started space era of cinema.
