The Man from Snowy River

Ho hum...two fighting brothers, a mysterious man that falls in love with the daughter. Same old, same old. Nice scenery though.

It's a decent Australian western with a compelling story that involves a lot of horses. That it focuses on the struggles of a young man left to fend for himself makes it more interesting than most stock western stories are and Kirk Douglas playing both of the brothers sure threw me for a loop for a while. Beautiful scenery, and some crazy riding, but the soundtrack was just a bit too annoying at times.

the kind of western that appeals to women more than men, the love story is sappy, cheesy, and takes up most of the time in the movie. the action is lackluster and sparse, it ain't that bad of a movie even considering; and douglas wasn't that bad anyway.

Felt like I was watching a beer commercial. The score is laid on thick.

I enjoyed Kirk Douglas playing twin brothers (one a rich rancher and one a grizzly miner), though I was surprised that they were supporting characters when he was top-billed. Tom Burlinson was good, but too constantly clean-shaven. A lot of good horse-back riding in this movie if you like that, and lots of shots of the beautiful Victorian mountains.
