A pitch perfect family drama, with a hearttugging performance that introduced Reese Witherspoon.

I first watched this movie long before Reese Witherspoon was Reese Witherspoon, and knew that this girl was gonna be a star. She hits every note true in this nuanced portrait of a girl on the edge of growing up. The supporting cast, especially Sam Waterston, is just as stellar, and the story is delicate, honest, and right.

A perfectly lovely little film. Witherspoon is just amazing: peevish, petulant, sarcastic, childish, flirtatious, cool, and unseasonably mature, all in turns. She's the definitive 13 Going On 14. Was like The Member of the Wedding, and also reminded me of Lucas (without that movie's sappy ending). Beautifully paced throughout. I thought it actually could've ended a bit earlier; the finale makes for a tidy resolution, but the scene in the graveyard says all of that without dialogue.

So I guess this is redneck love? The movie feels very simplistic and melodramatic, so if you're into that type of thing, maybe you will enjoy this more than I did; however, for me, it was just okay.

Top badass moment? Watching this, I released I’ve never given Elvis Presley his due as a singer. I think the obese, burger-eating version has coloured my opinion a bit. Not a movie about a human kidnapped by Moon aliens, but one about a love triangle set a year before Lycra was invented, when some good ol’ country folk fail to follow the basics of H&S, date jailbait and beat their kids with belts. But it's probably a better film than I've made it out to be. No cats, chainsaws or decapitations.

The writing is novel-like and everything else about it is also very well done

It's an ok movie. Witherspoon is quite likable and she acts well in this movie. Dragged on a bit too long though.

There's nothing bad per se about this movie. It's competently shot, well paced and well acted (young Reese Witherspoon is especially good). But it's just so hollow, so simplistic. There's no bite, no substance, no emotional weight. In fact I can't even think of anything else to write about it.

Reese Witherspoon at 15 in her first film does a fine job. Emily Warfield is the gorgeous older sister. Sam Waterston in perhaps his best performance as their dad. The handsome young man (Jason London) is the object of both girls affections. The characters are likable and genuine. A story about first loves, found and tragically lost, and about family bonds. An entertaining heartfelt movie well worth watching.
