I get the feeling someone involved with this at one point made a phone call saying, "Hey, I scammed ___ out of some money. Want a trip to Paris?"

Oblique, bizarre but fascinating directorial debut from Meredith, who seems to have been bored with the cops-and-robbers tale he has to tell, and tries to tell it in the most convoluted way possible - while these convolutions make this fairly straightforward story difficult to track at times (and the poor quality of the current public domain print only adds to the confusion), there is an interesting spark here, especially once the rhythm establishes itself. Great work as always by Laughton.

A product of fun. And it's like that because the stars basically fired the producer/director to direct themselves playing detective around Paris! And when it's Charles Laughton being the world famous detective Maigret and Franchot Tone portraying a nearly cartoonish villain, with Burgess Meredith as the weird man in the middle, I was going to have a good time as well. I won't deny the production was uneven, but if you take it for what it is you'll see how entertaining this whole debacle is!
