As a kid, my parents would often talk about 'wasted potential'. Then they'd sigh and look at me for an uncomfortably long time. After seeing this movie I can understand their sentiment a lot better. What seems to grow into a sort of fun Ninja Scroll Lite quickly becomes a huge, unengaging mess with stupid characters doing stupid things and RZA as a void where charisma comes to die. Does feature a hilariously fat Russel Crowe wielding a gunknife though. Have to give it that.

This film tries to have it both ways in every way. The actors use stilted dialog and RZA makes heavy use of cheesy effects, yet elsewhere the film uses sophisticated effects and "serious" dialog. The fight scenes evoke the Shaw Brothers in their oddness, but not in their compelling choreography, editing, or comprehensibility. This film does for kung fu films what Smokin' Aces did for disaffected hitman flicks: it rips off their surface details whilst having nothing interesting to say about them.

RZA casts himself as the titular hero, who manages to muster but one facial expression throughout this gory love letter to Shaw Brothers kung fu movies. Though it pains me to cast too many aspersions on what is obviously the passion project of a superfan...it's not a great flick. There's lots of colorful characters and goofy weapons, but the martial arts have a bizarre arrhythmic cadence to them and the movie drags badly through the final half hour. The CGI on Batista was pretty cool though.

I wanted to like it more as I could appreciate was RZA was aiming for, but this was undeniably proper shit. RZA herds together every Chinese American actor known to man like some sort of weird oriental shepherd dog & stuffs them aimlessly into a film devoid of charm, humour or self-awareness. Crowe, playing an Englishman, with an Aussie accent, who uses the word "vacation" is by far the films most entertaining facet, & any scene lacking him or Liu can be ignored. RZA himself is total wank also.

If "The Man with the Iron Fists" was any more self-indulgent, there would have been a scene near the end where RZA's character pulled off his face to reveal he was M. Night Shyamalan the entire time.

RZA doesn't do too bad for his first directorial outing. You can tell a lot of material was cut out and the story suffers for it, but it's the characters and possibilities that make this entertaining. The action scenes were occasionally hurt by editing but there are still some great fights on display.

RZA's The Man with the Iron Fists is a film that has absolutely nothing going for it, and contains not a single reason for you to watch it. This homage -- which purportedly started as a four-hour "epic" and was trimmed down to the 96-minute disaster that was released -- to the martial arts genre is worse than the vast majority of the films it aspires to admire. If only RZA adopted the stage name "RAZ." It would be that much easier to lead into what I think this film deserves: All of the RAZzies.

Recently, I've been trying to fill a wrenching void inside of me; Turns out all I needed to see was a besotted, coitus-craving Russell Crowe rip a guy's sternum apart with his trusty knife-pistol. Would've been great if RZA's directorial/writing skills were up to par, but I had a good enough time.

This movie is a typical case of so-bad-it's-good, and the director used that fact decently. The plot, the dialogue and the ridiculous amounts of blood and violence are all bad, but it's so damn fun to watch. It's a shame the low budget is mostly visible through the bad CGI blood effects. This movie is definitely not as fun as some other "exploitation" movies out there (Grindhouse, Machete, Kill Bill), but I must say I'm glad there are still movies like this today.

Its not a movie that really needs story. which is why i downgraded it to 85 (which is not so good for me) it drags a bit with trying to tell a story in the middle. I did however love all of the action sequences, which is why I didn't rank lower. Its goofy, fun and reminiscent of all the old kung fu movies RZA no doubt took inspiration from. I can see why tarantino presented this, its just fun, and Batista didn't suck!

Fun indulgent movie is fun and indulgent. It's no timeless tale of good versus evil, is a generic Chinese martial arts flick with a hip-hop swirl, spiced to the nines with both intense and comedic imagery. Thank God this isn't a movie that intends to take itself seriously as a strict and stern action movie. There's a story there, but it's more so something to... not ignore, but to only hold as secondary to the imagery and the fight scenes. It's shut-your-brain-off-and-mark-out-about-movies fun.

The RZA's obviously spent time watching Kung Fu films and thinking about what action sequences and fights he digs. But when creating his own picture he missteps as a filmmaker. The character motivations are terrible--to the point that the final fight is boring rather than cool. The editing poorly crams in subplots instead of making them deleted scenes. The exotic Asian brothel is offensive. And a flashback is so laughably executed it should be spoofed in Black Dynamite. Avoid.

This is a really fun Kung Fu movie that is directed by Rza. The plot is just a good excuse to have a lot of fun and exciting action scenes and fights. The cast is an interesting mix of characters. If you are a fan of Kung Fu movies then you should check this one out.

As a directorial debut, the RZA definitely compiled everything his loved about the martial arts genre into one movie, much like Rob Zombie did with House of 1,000 Corpses (with horror). While it felt like Tarantino had fingers in some of the style and shots, you could feel the heart that RZA put into the story. And it carried a lot of the the cliches about the genre, but worked them into a fun movie with a lot of homages paid.

THE MAN WITH THE IRON FISTS is one of those films that delivers exactly what it promises: kung-fu ass kicking (with plenty of blood), impossibly bad-ass characters--namely Russell Crowe's aptly named Jack Knife, who's fucking awesome--exotic settings, exotic women, and a good, rap-heavy soundtrack. The RZA makes a fine directorial debut, and isn't bad as a low-key protagonist, but the acting load is mostly on other shoulders, and is borne well. It doesn't quite transcend its genre, but so what?

On paper, this seemed like really good idea - RZA making a movie fusing his fondness for kung fu movies and a hip-hop soundtrack all in grindhouse style. Unfortunately, he lacks the skill to make it a good film. His direction, writing, acting and stunt work were all very disappointing. The whole thing ends up being a pretty convoluted mess. Russell Crowe and Lucy Liu did okay with what they were given, I guess. This project had so much potential - it's a shame to see an end product like this.

Not too shabby for RZA's directorial debut and first real lead role. Nothing groundbreaking, but some solid, mindless kung-fu nonetheless. It's obvious everyone involved really loves the genre and were having a bit of fun. Props for Gordon Liu and Pam Grier cameos, and having a fat Russel Crowe go down on some chick on screen haha. Also, hell of a soundtrack. Nice seeing anyone from Wu-Tang getting some Hollywood recognition.

Way too many characters for the little amount of one on one fighting that was in the movie. Even the climactic battle kept jumping between 3 different fights. Drop the Russell Crowe character and a half dozen plotlines you could have had a taut kung fu homage (and enough material for two sequels), but unfortunately it seems RZA has neither the writing nor directing chops to make more than a scatter-shot film.

I enjoyed it, but not as much as I would have hoped... loving Rza so anticipating this. It has a fun rap soundtrack, and some nice visual flair. I don't even care about the story, I didn't really think the point was to tell an amazing one. I figure the point is to introduce badass characters (it succeeds) and put them into badass fights (well...). That's the problem, outside of the end, which has some beautiful scenery and fun action, the fights aren't that memorable. Still a fun movie.

This film was pretty cool. It had a really good soundtrack. Just great epic music during the fights. You could definitely see RZA's fingerprints with that going on. The blood and gore you could see that Eli Roth was up to no good again. Wow. This movie got bloody! I thought that the weapons and some of the fighting skills (a man that turned into metal) was very innovative. Crowe was really funny, RZA wasn't bad and Jamie Chung was beautiful. A light but fun popcorn movie.

I wasnt completely sold on the storyline but the fight scenes look great and are very well choreographed. Im willing to suspend my disbelief and see characters defying gravity if it means the film makers can be more creative in the big action sequences. Russell Crowe could have easily phoned this in but he actually puts in a decent performance although im not sure what his characters main agenda was. The story just fails with a weak script. I would have been happier with a 90 minute fight scene.

The only people who seem like they are actually acting are Russell Crowe who is appropriately over the top and strangely enough Pam Grier even though she only holds a very small cameo role. The rest of the acting is horribly wooden even from people who have shone talent in the past like Lucy Liu. The direction is very muddled and while RZA certainly has an intense love of kung fu movies, he isn't quite capable of pulling one off himself. This does show promise so his next film might be better.

Having only seen the extended director's cut I can't speak to the neutered theatrical version, but the extra material doesn't do much to make more sense of what little plot there is here. If anything, the movie revels in its nonsense, constructing a pastiche of genre clichés into a visceral, visually stunning kung-fu collage. While there's some tongue & cheek humour to be found, RZA's earnestness and sincere love for the material is what makes it work. This is no ironic wankfest. It's good fun.

It seems like Tarantino was about 50/50 in whether or not to make Django Unchained a slavery epic or martial arts film. If this is true, he went for the former and gave RZA permission to write and direct a fun but very rough Grindhouse kung fu flick. Also, the ending credits will make you cry blood.

The movie’s literate in its subject matter just enough to be enjoyable in those gleefully knowing, unassuming moments of pastiche and blood effects. To its credit there’s little difference between its disastrous dialogue and some of the awful lower-tier Shaw plot contrivances. Unlike the joy of those films, though, no one carries any gravitas except Crowe, who knows the assignment and has more charisma than all the other supporting players combined, calling attention to a void you want filled.

I remember when I learnt that RZA is making a martial arts movie I was pretty excited. I always had a soft spot for Chinese fighting movies, and Wu Tang Clan brought them into music. It seems only logical for one of them to try and apply the aesthetics of their music to a film. The result is far from what I hoped, and not even close to what I expected. To make it simple - this is bad. It has nothing to do with old-school kung-fu movies. It is not even fun bad movie.

Not as terrible as I thought it would be. The Man With the Iron Fists suffers from some average storytelling and a couple of characters who just aren't that well developed. RZA makes a better director than actor, but still, there's some good acting to be found in there somewhere and the violence AND the gadgets are both over the top in the movie, giving you perfect eye candy, if that's what you're going for. Not a good movie, but entertaining and fun to watch nonetheless.

Fun kung-fu epic (which wears its explicit and implicit KILL BILL inspirations on its sleeve); well crafted by RZA, but choppy storytelling suggests there's an even better version on the cutting room floor; there are far too many featured protagonists which often makes the film feel too overly rushed at times. Very funny supporting turn by Crowe (channeling a mix of Burton and O'Toole) could withstand its own movie, and is a definite highlight here.

(Viewed on 28/09/13): Rza pays tribute to the great martial arts films of the 60s and 70s filtered through a Tarantino/Rodriguez aesthetic. As others have noted, it plays like a well curated mixtape, but the attempts to build a mythology around its central character are less successful mostly because of Rza: he isn't a strong enough actor for the role, and his quietness is neither intense or mysterious. Crowe is fun as an over the top rogue, and the action scenes are enjoyable, if derivative.

RZA doesn't have the skills to bring to film what he brought to his revolutionary hip-hop career, in which he sampled kung fu footage for amusing results. Iron Fists is occasionally funny, a sort of martial arts flick/hood film that seems uncompromisingly campy, a trashy fan-made cinematic mixtape, but also a product that is often spoiled by bad editing and RZA's naiveness with the media. Okay, so I didn't went in, expecting some philosophical dialogues, but they still managed to amaze me how unnatural and dull they were. However, that's the main minus of the movie. Besides that, it was pretty entertaining. Cheap--like a TV movie from the 70s or 80s. The acting/actors, visuals, set-pieces and writing remind me of a cheap TV movie from the 70s and 80s. If it were used in a creative way a la John Carpenter, then this wouldn't be a problem, but that's not the case. You can tell the fight choreographers wanted to hide the fact that the actors don't really know how to fight as well.
