In old Spanish California, the oppressive colonial government is opposed by Zorro, masked champion of the people, who appears out of nowhere with flashing sword and an athletic sense of humor, scarring the faces of evildoers with his Mark. Meanwhile, beautiful Lolita is courted by villainous Captain Ramon, rich but effete Don Diego... and dashing Zorro, who is never seen at the same time as Don Diego. As Zorro continues to evade pursuit, Ramon puts the damsel in distress... (imdb)

Fairbanks is full of energy as Zorro. His regular belly laughs can be felt through the screen and the decades. His early parkour antics are simple yet unabashedly joyful. The swordfights are embellished with leaps over tables, jumps to the backs of couches which subsequently tip over -- there is constant motion, activity. And it's capital F Fun!

Fairbanks does a great job, but it's just way too slow and plodding. Could have easily been edited down by a third and nothing important would be lost. The ending is good with a good amount of prophetic parkour being done by Fairbanks.

The pace is way too slow to take full advantage of Fairbanks Snr.'s manic energy and trademark cheek, which is so evident in his film appearances in the 1910s. However, Douglas as Zorro/Don Diego does have his moments, in particular the final chase scene over rooftops and through windows and the ongoing 'Have you seen this one?' gag. My recommendation, just watch the final 15 minutes, it's a blast.

Still a fun, entertaining movie nearly 100 years later. Guy Williams is still my favorite Zorro, but you can see where Douglas Fairbanks laid the groundwork for future interpretations of the character. Fairbanks had some nice parkour moves, too.

Fun, if unoriginal, telling of a familiar story. Fairbanks as Don Diego is a drag but he's great as Zorro. If there's one thing he sells well it's the idea that the mask really does transform the man.

for the most part it's fairly slow moving, but when the swordplay is on...IT IS ON!!! everyone knows zorro's trademark style, humiliate the enemy, carve "Z"s in everything, and who couldnt love that? i do wish that the love story was scrapped for some more swashbuckling though. an ok movie bogged down with lack of the action and adventure we were promised.

Fairbanks's first swashbuckler (and the picture that started that genre rolling, really) isn't all that different in tone from the contemporary comedies he was doing before it: light adventure fair with Fairbanks himself as the main draw, delivering a bit of laid back comedy as the slouchy Don Diego, and the impressive leaping and climbing he's best known for as Zorro. The rest of it's all competently done enough, though the overall presentation can be bland and slow at times.

Rip no PirateBay.

I'm not a fan of Douglas Fairbanks films in general and this was no different. Pretty slow and dull, which are all the things an adventure film shouldn't be.
