What at first appears to be an ill-advised attempt at a period piece eventually unfolds as a pointed critique of 19th-century morality, and a rich exploration of cruelty and forgiveness. The story develops nicely, and the interplay between characters is as revealing as Rohmer's contemporary work. Terrific performances from all four leads. Gorgeously lit scenes arranged in compositions that can only be called "painterly". Not as deeply involving as Rohmer's other movies, but still packs a punch.

A good period drama from Rohmer, nice costumes, good performances and a predictable but still interesting story. Can't say I'm all that excited about it, but it has few flaws.

Using only the novella as a script (with a couple of changes) becomes a way for Rohmer to highlight the hypocrisy and absurdity of social codes, and indeed the brutal realities involved in protecting social status, while at the same time alluding to the mystery of desire in the final moments. But, despite the numerous compositional references to Romantic painting, there remains a feeling that the filmmaker was also somewhat hemmed in by the text. Syberberg's monologue version also stars Clever.

Surprisingly good, especially considering it lacks quite a bit of what normally makes Rohmer's films so distinctive and enjoyable. The plot gets a bit muddled at points, but for the most part the film is emotionally engaging.

I really want to see a film by Rohmer that I can file in the same category as Gene Hackman once put it "I watched a Rohmer movie once.. it was like watching paint dry" - and I genuinely thought this would be it, but it was okay and somewhat engaging. Though at times too moralistic, but that's what he aims at, so - can you blame him?

A meticulous, impeccably mounted adaptation of a deeply strange, outdated, and even somewhat off-putting story. I think Rohmer was obviously aware of what he was doing (and ultimately the film does take a on surprisingly familiar Rohmer-esque shape), but the bigger question remains why was this story so crucial to him that he taught himself German to tell it? It's as fascinating as it is frustrating, comparable to Perceval as an outlier in his filmography but ultimately less successful.

Maratona em honra de Bruno Ganz (1941 - 2019) filme #3. Só porque o Rohmer fez um filme bonito pra caraleo pra me convencer a torcer por um estuprador no final. Patriarcado é uma bosta mesmo. BlurayRip no Making Off

In a historic period and a moral code quite exotic for our perspective Rohmer is still all about exploring the real (and strong) emotions of the protagonists - without succumbing into melodrama.
