The Marriage Circle

This is my first Lubitsch film and I like what I see. Even a perfect marriage isn't perfect, and a bad marriage isn't all bad. Lubitsch's portrayal of human romantic relationships is impressive in its honesty and simplicity, with humour used very effectively to emphasise what it means to love and what it means to desire. In particular, the way in which Lubitsch explores female sexual desire (the constantly heaving chest of Marie Prevost is mesmerising) is progressive (even by today's standards).

Had this been a sound feature, the comic elements would have likely been more potent and the drama more tactful. While very basic, the script is the motor of the film as usually with Lubitsch.

I feel like had I seen this before One Hour With You, I would have liked this more than I did. Probably would have made me like One Hour better as well.
