Entertaining and surprisingly fresh. There is an amateur feel to much of its style, and I mean that as a compliment: Shepard seems more interested in getting "the cool shot" than getting the best one, and stylistically, there's not a lot of regard for convention in this flick. The result is a slightly abstract experience with a whole lot of cool cinematography. Clearly this was a labour of love for all involved, and Brosnan gives the best work of his career. Enjoyable, but nothing amazing.

There were moments where this movie lagged a little bit, but that's alright. Pierce Brosnan was a gem in this hilarious role. If you would've told me years ago when he was playing James Bond that he'd do something like this, I would've called you a liar.

Surprisingly dramatic film with comic elements that has some good song choices and an interestingly skewed point of view. Watching the film, the exposition nearly bored me to sleep, but sticking with it made me realize this film had more to it than at first glance and is a really good dramedy with probably the best acting Brosnan's ever done.

Pierce Brosnan and Greg Kinnear are pitch-perfect in this film which nicely discusses the lives of two men who aren't exactly getting what they want out of life. It is charming and enjoyable, with some witty dialogue.

The way it begins gave me little hope for it being an even tolerable film, but by the middle, Greg Kinnear and Pierce Brosnan really make it work. The humor and style take off, and by the end, it was a very enjoyable buddy-comedy. Pretty good!

I couldn't help but feel that Brosnan was only doing this film to help ease the transition from his squeaky clean take on Bond to darker, more serious roles. But still, he does have some chemistry with Greg Kinnear, which makes the first and third acts a joy to watch.

Love 3/4's of this black comedy. Endlessly rewatchable and so many quotable lines and memorable scenes. The ending - not so good. But for me it doesn't really matter. The journey getting there is so much fun and is unlike most comedies we see nowadays. Side note: this DVD cover does an extremely poor job representing this film and really shows they had no idea how to market this buddy-buddy comedy pairing of Brosnan & Kinnear.

You have to love both Brosnan and Kinnear's characters. Both seem genuine. The movie doesn't surprise, though. It was slow to get started, and seemed to not really know where it was going. It's worth watching for Brosnan's character alone, but be ready to for what will feel like a fragmented and incomplete movie watching experience.

What a massive missed opportunity! Pierce Brosnan is never better than the lonely, debauched hitman, and his early scenes show the flipside of being a hired gun - a soulless procession of hotel rooms, booze, prostitutes. The movie falls down with Greg Kinnear's character, and the overall cheesy look of the movie - Kinnear edges the material towards sitcom territory, where The Matador could have been a terrific jet black comedy.

Brosnan began his career with a James Bond pastiche that served as 5-season audition to actually play the superspy. Now that his tenure as 007 has come and gone, it seems he'll settle into playing roles that harken back or deconstruct the biggest gig of his career. While the storyline is bland, this is probably the best acting Brosnan has ever done (a debate that is admittedly sparsely populated). He imbues the role with a motor-mouthed neediness that lends his descent some dramatic legitimacy.
