Rosi's film seems to delve into very local and contemporary politics, namely postwar Italian energy policy, but the issues raised remain incredibly relevant 40+ years later: Private industry vs national interest, western oil dependency's effect on relations with the Middle East, etc. While the writers take a hard-left angle typical to Italian cinema, implying that Mattei was offed for supporting the FLN, the treatment is far from one-sided and Mattei's character is fascinatingly complex.
