Madame Flora is terrified when she perceives a supernatural presence during one of her fraudulent séances. Menotti's first international success, "The Medium" is a tragedy in two acts for five singers, a dance-mime role, and a chamber opera for thirteen instruments and fourteen players: flute, oboe, clarinet, bassoon, horn, trumpet, percussion, piano (4 hands), and string quintet. The music is dissonant, eerie, and morbid and includes melodies such as 'O, black swan.' (imdb)

I've already seen the first attempt at The Medium, which was a TV episode of Studio One from 1948, and didn't like it much. Somehow someone had gathered enough financial support to attempt a proper feature film with the idea of a noir opera. Visually it's really good, but it's also unbearable at times because it's a opera. One that I appreciate exists, but it's a challenging watch. Real heavy experience.

Serves me right for going into films blind. If I had known what I was getting into was a noir opera I would probably have stayed away, or at least held off until I was in the right mood. If noir opera sounds like something interesting to you you'll probably like it more than me. The narrative seemed interesting enough and the visuals are captivating but opera has a steep hill to climb for me to like it and this isn't up to that task.
