A film version of the Carson McCullers play. Frankie Addams, a very boyish articulate 12-year-old girl, is going through an unhappy stage of her life, having been spurned by the neighborhood girls. She spends most of her time in the kitchen talking to her black maid, Bernice, and the younger next door boy, John Henry. Her brother Jarvis is about to marry Janice, and Frankie imagines that she will leave town with them. However she eventually begins to grow up into a young woman. (imdb)

Sort of a Drama Queen training film. Harris is both relentless and merciless. By sticking with the play version, they emphasized the staginess of it and greatly reduced the impact of what was a marvelous book. John Henry's role was also shrunk down to a nub. Waters was very good indeed though.

The script is stagey, Zinnemann's direction is plodding, and-- although Julie Harris is a fine actress--it is a little creepy when a 26 year old (particularly on film) plays a 12 year old in anything except "Peter Pan." Still, Ethel Waters gives a performance of great depth and range, and it is worth a few cringe-worthy moments to experience her great talent in all its fullness.
