The first half where Xuan tries to kill Shan, and their date really shine with it's mix of tension, quirky silliness, fast pacing and great camerawork. Unfortunately it's a bit too nonsensical and crude in other spots, untethering it from earth while simultaneously rolling it around in the gutter. Xuan and the plot lose their unpredictability in the last half of the film, causing you to lose all interest in what happens next.

Has some of the trademark Stephen Chow comedy, but a lot of the gags delve into the grotesque or overdone, not unlike an American Family Guy type show. The humor is not nearly as tight as Kung Fu Hustle, the acting is alright and the plot works in the end, although it is somewhat jumpy in the midsection.

Spends quite a bit of time on the moral of the story, I was expecting more jokes.

Corny as hell, but there are a few laughs here. You got to appreciate Chinese comic timing to really got full value. If not, you're just gonna shake your head. Let's just say, it helps to watch it together with Asians who're not handicapped by western comic snobbery.

The movie was a weird and crazy West Side Storyesque comedy similar in style to most Stephen Chow other works. Some of the CGI was really poorly done but strangely that actually fit the style of the film. I couldn't tell if Yun Lin was a bad actress in the perfect role or a good actress making the most of a crazy role. Chao Deng does a pretty good good of playing his character and making it his own instead of just copying a Stephen Chow routine. All together it's a great film to watch with frien

Both a message movie and an over-the-top absurdist comedy about a mermaid that falls in love with the very man she's destined to kill -- a business man who plans to turn a gulf into a thematic park. Somewhat heartfelt and with a striking physical comedy -- her first attemp to kill him, the octopus lunch scene, his encounter with the policeman and the unexpectedly violent third act work almost as ballet sequences, balancing CGI effects and weird dialogues (McDonald/Madonna!).

Haven't seen a Stephen Chow film in a long time, but his humour is pretty quickly identifiable. I enjoyed it quite a bit, not just for the comedy but also the way it takes its generic narrative and makes it feel just fresh enough while you're watching.

There's a point at which absurdism becomes tiring and this film reaches that point in record time.
