All of the characters are incredibly irritating, with all the "humor" (I use the term loosely) relying on people being unbelievably obnoxious, stupid, or uptight. It's loaded with my comedy pet peeves... pratfalls, double-takes, scenes where everyone is yelling at each other. But worst of all, it's one of those movies where the entire premise is based on someone just refusing to come out and tell the truth, in a situation when it's clearly the best thing to do. That just drives me nuts.

Only Sturges could take a code defying premise and wrap it up in an increasing series ridiculous events, culminated by the most improbable of improbable endings and get away with it. The superficial comedy in the film's not great, especially that damned stuttering, but the way it makes a mockery of Hollywood conventions and formulas, as well as social norms, is really a wonder to behold.

A typical and formulaic 1940s Hollywood feel-good comedy. It has a share of funny moments, but usually it's just people being dumb and immature, and all the repeated gags just made me roll my eyes.

I was so cool with Preston Sturges before this. What happened? Stuttering is NOT funny.

Films like this, with a surplus of pratfalls, exaggerated stuttering, and outrageous situations, run a risk of becoming obnoxious but Sturges and the performers keep it all well-spirited and hilarious. The principal cast (Hutton, Bracken, Demarest and Lynn) give excellent comedic performances. Props to Sturges for developing an entire film around a Code-pushing premise (our heroine wakes up one morning to find herself pregnant with a stranger's baby) and getting the thing made at all.

Hilarious screwball that daringly pushes that Hays Code to its absolute limits. Sturges' script is witty, smart and expertly timed and all of the leads are great in their roles. Drags a little bit towards the end when it goes towards caper-film territory but gets its footing back at the end with an uproarious climax.

Not as funny any more, as a lot of the uptight, small-town mores it spoofs are less prevalent.

One of the great screen comedies. Well directed and well written, and Bracken and Hutton are marvelous together. Diana Lynn is excellent as the wise little sister, and William Demarest is hilarious.

Viewed February 16, 2017. Immediately ranks among my favorite screwball comedies. I think the magic comes from never being quite sure where it's going to end up. Consequently, the ending is a total knockout (so surprising that they get Hitler himself to comment on it), providing the perfect ribbon to a wonderfully constructed film.

Do I have the wait for a sequel to find out who the father was?! Preston Sturges really goes absurd with this one! Throws out every rule in the book and turns it into a happy(ish) ending. Oh, and poor fellow....

This is certainly one audacious screwball comedy, but I must admit that among Preston Sturges films, this one just seems fine. Perhaps it's my rather intense dislike of Betty Hutton (who I'll admit great reduces her egregious overacting here) or just the bar being set very very high by my love of his other films, but this one did not blow me away. I have to say though ... William Demarest is hilarious as Hutton's father.

This is one that will need a second viewing. The first time around, I think I was too caught up with wondering, "How did that get past the Production Code?" I laughed a lot, even though parts were ridiculous and the physical humor often seemed forced. But underneath all that, there's a pretty sly story about small-town life, making mistakes, and trying to set things right.

This isn't bad and has a few good lines, but the characters were all too annoying for me to really get into it, and the performances are not great. I'm surprised they got away with some of this in 1944, but other than that it's an okay but sometimes annoying comedy. Despite the somewhat risque aspects, it's pretty formulaic and the humor is really uneven.
