Wasn't all that good really. It wasn't terrible or anything but just forgettable. So that means it's not good.

The plot is unoriginal and the pacing is too slow. These combined make the film kinda boring.

I liked it better the first time I saw it. It was called The Searchers.

A good, but slow paced, western flick with Tommy Lee Jones on the trail of his kidnapped grandaughter.

The Missing is a well-made Western that takes a familiar story and doesn't do much with it. It's nothing special, and there are plenty of missed opportunities that could have elevated it above being simply good. You can appreciate the work that went into it, but it's not necessarily a film that's worth your time, largely because fans of the genre will have seen it before, and newcomers have better films to go back and watch instead of it.

Engrossing paraphrase of THE SEARCHERS unfortunately willfully ignores any potentially complex motivations of its characters, instead presenting a fairly simplistic chase movie, though surprisingly repellent and gruesome violence makes it difficult to appreciate as mere mindless entertainment. Distinguished by beautiful cinematography (another nod to Ford) and a terrific cast, lead by excellent performances from both Jones and Blanchett, who bring a poignancy to the father-daughter dynamic.

Although the Western hasn't been in vogue for many years, films like 2003's Open Range and The Missing prove that there's still potential for it to still be alive and relevant for many years to come.

This is a complete throwback to 1940's and 50's westerns and frankly doesn't work very well. The technical aspects are fine, the acting, the direction, etc., but it's just predictable and not very likable.

Blanchett did again a stong performance. I also liked tremendesly the black witch character, played by Eric Schweig. This western's got well done visuals and story's got enough colorful path, but the executing of the film did not succeed nearly as good as it should. I've seen it before and during reviewing I'd remember only short fragments here and there. Easily forgottable flick. Yep, jxc0207 was right. It *is* a rerun of John Ford's The Searchers.

Something seemed missing, not sure what, I think maybe it jumps around too much on what kind of movie it is. The cinematography and locations are well done and Blanchett and Jones are very good in their roles.

One of Ron Howard's least-effective films. One odd-duck western.

tippy-toeing around trying not to appear racist somehow made it more so. Found a lot of the direction annoying, seems revisionist westerns are no more my thing than regular ones.

Good story with traditional themes and interesting setting. Strong pacing keeps the suspense high throughout the movie. Good performances all around, and looks great.

Positif: Western sombre comme peu de films, deux excellentes performances de Blanchett et Jones, décors et lieux de qualité. Négatif: Histoire sans surprises, trop long, réalisation un peu banale.

For some reason people don't seem to like Ron Howard's try at the Western genre. I like it just fine -- grim, well-acted, thoroughly absorbing

Not memorable, obviously, since I can't remember what was good or bad about it. I remember thinking that Tommy Lee Jones was a bad choice to play that particular character. Cate Blanchette, however; wonderful.

Fairly good, would have been better if it tried to stand out more, right now it's competent, but predictable. The performances were rather good, particularly from Cate Blanchett, the setting and story were interesting enough, but the execution could have been better and less predictable.

billythekyd loves movies in which actors (or their stunt doubles) ride horses hell for leather, especially through woodlands or down steep slopes. This has some fine scenes along these lines. Cate Blanchett is superb. Only the final fight in near-darkness lessens the impact of this superior Western.

Women's Western, concerned with a frontier healer (Blanchett) and her relationship issues, her maternal instincts, her sexual urges. A classic Western premise, this, and perfectly watchable in its working-out

This is a strange film. I don't really expect much from a western directed by Ron Howard, but surprisingly it's okay (if overly long) from a nuts and bolts perspective. But it seriously does not know where it's head is at. All of the villains are Native American (or their lackeys), yet the film seems to think it's a balanced portrayal since it has Native American heroes too.
