Big director, lots of stars, results that are not terribly affecting at all. I've seen this called one of the worst "big" movies ever made

Bloated and boring. Nicholson is restrained but Brando is overblown.

Simply horrible. You would think a movie with Jack Nicholson and Marlon Brando couldn't miss. Think again.

Brando at the very beginning of his anything goes, deliberate insanity phase, and Nicholson still wrapped in the energy of his wild genius phase and yet it feels drab. The plot about Brando's hired lawman bringing a gang of rustlers to justice is so familiar that all the offbeat details thrown in can't enliven it. Even when the two masterful actors face off, it often and quickly degenerates into a dull trudge.

This is one very offbeat western. The film has an interesting cast and the story for the most part keeps entertaining. Marlon Brando gives one of his extremely weird performances. Jack Nicholson and most of the supporting cast are very good in this film. Give this movie a try if you like westerns.

Brando is sometimes a bit over the top but it's still a strong performance. Nice movie anyways

Brando looks and sounds like a genuine crazy person in this film. I really don't think he's acting and from everything I read, it sounds like he may have been unstable. This film is a bit of a mess, but I think I liked it. It's too long, but there are some really great scenes in it.

some of the most bad ass scenes i've seen in a western, an engaging plot that doesn't force you to take sides, nicholson and brando. yeah, pretty much a winner in my book.

Interesting mix of characters; super smoochable 70's heroine; not much dead space; has one of the most abrupt "payoff" revenge scenes ever put to film, which I frankly wasn't too fond of, due to its abruptness; excellent font and color scheme for the opening credits. I liked the Nicholson/Brando pairing-- thought it played quite well.

Unfairly maligned in its day, time has been kind to T.M.B, Penn's offbeat Western starring two of the greatest actors to ever grace the silver screen. Its off beats are mostly delivered by Brando, who gives a truly bizarre performance that's near impossible to assess. It's a stubbornly divisive turn that will annoy many viewers, but it becomes increasingly compelling as the stakes are raised. The film isn't always consistent, but there are a few excellent scenes that make it worthwhile.

Marlon Brando was miscast, making it hard to take the movie seriously.

A very uneven, eccentric Western. I liked how it inverts the role of good and bad guy in Western by making Nicholson's horse thief the most human character and Brando's hired protector and thief hunter into sadistic killer. Nicholson gives a convincing restrained performance. But Brando overacts with a character that solely consist out of eccentricities. The movie is tonally inconsistent. The plot likewise is also unfocused and doesn't come together as well as it should have in the end.

The "comedy" sections with the silly music stopped this from being a better movie.

Largely slow burn with pretty shots of the countryside. I dig it a lot. Brando has a terrible accent yet he's still capable of commanding the screen. Nicholson comes across as rather sympathetic despite being responsible for the events of the movie.

The first 30 minutes, before Brando shows up the play mischief on and off camera, had cool "hang out movie" vibes to it. When the two oscar winners meet its oddly anticlimactic.

This film is right 'up my street' as they say. Its very much a slow and perhaps more subtle type of Western film. It's not full of gunfights and action, it's more a character focussed Western based drama. I enjoyed seeing Jack Nicholson play a cocky and self assured cowboy, I enjoyed seeing him interact with Harry Dean Stantons role and I particularly enjoyed seeing the male female character, Jane Braxton, a self assured lady who does become close to Tom Logan (played by Jack Nicholson).
