The Monkey's Mask

What could have been an interesting spin on film noir is torpedoed by awkward performances, flat, self-serious direction, bad narration, and pages and pages of even worse poetry. It's hard to tell which poems were intentionally bad, and which ones were just plain bad. Those poor actors.

At first this seems to have promise, with a sense of subtlety and bluntness that prevents the film from becoming straight jacketed as a 'lesbian suspense mystery'. As it continues though, its subtlety suddenly dissipates as the worn plot events start to become more and more common in the narrative. Quite a disappointment after the initial delight.
