Horror, noir, a great looking gorilla costume, and pathos to boot—what's not to love?

Starts out as a gangster drama and turns into a Gorilla warfare! So corny one has to love some of it. The ending was surprisingly weak for me, but with it's 'mob court case' and 'ape on the loose' fusion there was enough from the weird world of 40s horror to pass the time.

It's so dull. The courtroom bits and flashbacks take forever to get to the point. Once the gorilla bits start, they are cool, but the film is already racing to end as quickly as possible.

Premonitions of Robocop. Takes a while to get going, but it's surprisingly subtle, well-acted, and witty ("I find them dead. You find out why.") - albeit somewhat unfulfilling. Feels more like a sketch than a painting. All the same, the gorilla suit acting is amazingly subtle and heartfelt. If the opening were cut short and the transplant plot stretched out, it would be a minor classic.

Curiously ineffectual considering its plot and cast, this little horror thriller seems to have been the first to use this particular situation, which became very well worn later.
