A rare dud from Sidney Lumet. Sub par acting from Fonda.

I wish I could remake this. An excellent plot with pitiful execution. Weak acting, terrible dialogue, awful 80s synth score. Doubly disappointing considering the powerhouse of talent behind it.

This is just the sort of schlock 80's mystery/thriller that should have perhaps been made by Brian de Palma. Oddly enough Sid Lumet picked it up, and being a director of a higher order, he does kick it up a notch. Still, I would think he'd give a script like this a miss. Guess there was nothing better going around in the mid 80's.

I've seen Sidney Lumet doing better jobs than this.

Quite interesting thriller which, while nowhere near his best, is effectively directed by Lumet and contains a very good performance by Fonda. Her character is quite unique and elevates the film a notch or two. Bridges is likable as always, and you can even see some shades of Lebowski in his character. The biggest problem is that the mystery aspect is nothing special, motivations not developed and the film lacks any real surprises. The score would also be better suited in a romantic comedy.

The plot of The Morning After is not nearly as well captured or interesting as the day-by-day grinds of these characters.

Was kind of mildly interesting for a while in the beginning, with Lumet going for some weird Hitchcock-in-the-'80s thing, but then all of the vaguely intriguing noirish elements in the setup are completely squandered in the bizarrely slap-dash, abruptly anti-climactic revelation which pretty much disregards the entire plot up to that point and settles on "this character did it, don't ask why or how." Awful. And Sidney Lumet had terrible taste in music in the '80s.

A predictable thriller with below-average performances from talented actors.

A washed-up actress awakes in a flat, sunlit and overly colourful Los Angeles to find herself in serious difficulty, posing the question of how it could be possible to adopt what seems like a fatal catastrophe, so as (with the help of another) to be born again – that is, to finally wake up, rather than continuing to rush along in what is nothing more than a foggy dream. Interesting, but something seems to have gone considerably wrong with the writing and production. See also my review of SIESTA.
