Too much young adult angstiness; nothing even remotely fresh in its worldbuilding or storytelling or filmmaking. I do find Lily Collins' eyebrows to be insanely interesting, so that gave me something to look at through most of the movie.

Comparing the flick to other teen movies I've seen this year (The Host, Warm Bodies & Beautiful Creatures), it wasn't as good as the latter two, but definitely comparable. There were a few moments where primary characters went TOTAL emo bitch, and I'm not gonna lie, that sucked all sentiment out of those scenes for me. They also kind of tried a Star Wars bro-sis makeout thing which they possibly will cop out on down the line, who knows. Good-enough performances, entertaining, and worth seeing!

Whenever you hear some airhead badmouth the Twilight films, this competing bit of brainless teen bait should give you pause. A really dumb premise is met by awful special effects and a useless parade of love interests all in embarrassingly 90s 'The Crow'-esque gothdom. Also, 'Jace' (hahaha) looks distractingly like Toni Collette, not the best aspect for the male love interest. Bad and repelling, completely and utterly.

A literally gay and awful movie, perfect to laugh at. The dreamy teeny girl's only facial expression is with her mouth open, looking surprised. Dreamy JC looking dreamy as fuck, is almost unbearibly dreamy for me. This movie has a terrible story, and with it's running time of 6 hours (felt like that) it tests your mental state. I died a little when they said Bach is a 'shadow hunter'. Go fuck yourself in the gayest possible way, movie

As terrible and uninvolving a piece of drivel as you're bound to find this year -- a movie with its head so far up its ass, it spews out shit the other end. Jace was so gay and dreamy, all I could think of whilst watching it was washing his ridiculously gorgeous hair.

I liked the movie overall. I liked most of the cast - hated Valentine though. Book to movie they changed a lot and left out things obviously. Most of it was ok and decently done. They left out Simon/rat though.

Note that I haven't read any book from these series. The Mortal Instruments: City of Bones if, for me, a big budget action fantasy entertaining film with a decent plot. Let's not forget the cool CGI, the not bad actors and some comic relief. The film, however, has a villain who is poorly executed and the story loses its momentum as the film progresses. Despite that I had tons of fun with the film.

Well made piece of shit. It bored me into only paying attention at random intervals. It only gets this high of a score because the lead female (we will call her "eyebrows") does a decent job and seems pretty unaware she is surrounded by hacks and in a utter turd of a film.

I had a hard time rating this, because I loved the book. And it wasn't that horrible as an adaptation of the book. Despite keeping little of the original plot, it kept the relationships of the book and did a decent, although perhaps overly direct, job of showing them. But the plot made no sense if you hadn't read the book. It was just possible to grasp what was happening if you were familiar with the story. The acting was... pretty good, but something was lost in the screenwriting/directing.

Didn't find it nearly as terrible as some. Certainly not amazing, but the world that it is introducing seems rather interesting, and enough backstory to keep my attention.

An exercise in poorly-acted tedium, Mortal Instruments squanders a vaguely interesting premise with below-par performances and a meandering, unconvincing narrative. The year's weakest young-adult adaptation (just).

Many of the plot elements are utter rubbish, but I couldn't help being quite entertained by the constantly developing story line.

Don't judge this as you would judge art, because this is a story for teenagers. On that level, this is actually entertaining. The inevitable comparison: yes, it's better than Twilight, but that is not all that much, given that Twilight is brainless. Bottom line: this is a fun way to spend two hours, and a nice portrait of werewolves.

I give it Twilight movie of year award, beating Beautiful Creatures. On positive side, L. Collins atleast makes some facial expressions. 1 point is added for her teen slut look. The movie basically takes Twilight's premise and it can be used as friendzoning tutorial for adolescent girls.

One of my great sins is YAL, so naturally I read all the books, and love them. The story is for teens, the characters are teens, don't expect more - but for that this film is not bad. The adaptation is not perfect, but I wanted to slap most of the characters all the time and loved Magnus, so... They ruined the possibility of a decent part 2, however.

The script appears to have been generated by a bot trawling IMDB plot synopses and dragging in bits of Buffy, Twilight, Stargate (why is there a Stargate in this?) and a dozen other movies. That's the only explanation, because I refuse to believe there was any kind of human intelligence involved in the creation of this film.

Disappointed but hopeful. I was excited when I heard of another book series being made into movies. They need to look at where they went wrong with this and fix it because I am hoping for the second movie.

I don't believe I'm saying it - I loved this. It has its flaws, but after years upon years of garbage - Twilight, Beautiful Creatures and The Host - this is the first actual film of the wave. Genuine moments of emotion, an ensemble of characters you care about, and a sense of real fantasy and adventure, without cutting back on darkness. It's visually interesting and engaging all the way through, and Zwart's best to date. Very well cast - Sheehan in particular I liked. Some subpar music choices.

Pretty good actually, I enjoyed it and thought it was a nice blend of action, fantasy, romance and drama. It kept me entertained and wanting to find out what was going to happen next the entire time. Haven't read the books but I'm looking forward to the next instalment.

A decent fantasy film that had so much potential. If they had just toned down on the teen angst (which probably comes from the novel) this would have been even better. The concepts and effects are quite well done with some imagination.

Which one should she choose? The loyal, dependable, emotionally abusive one or the mysterious, dangerous, emotionally abusive one? Star Wars style incest still doesn't beat Twilight's beastiality/necrophilia combo.
