Underrated film that is actually less a typical adventure genre piece and something more akin to Herzog or even early Malick. Soundtrack, location shooting and cinematography. Characters are archetypes. Flaws are obvious but mostly unimportant.

A reminder to how much we lose as film-goers with Harrison Ford and Peter Weir working so little.

Weir has two types of movies; there is one that delves deep into the core of various cultures, and the other, this being an example, concerns one man alienating himself from his life to try and achieve a greater purpose. This one sort of succeeds, but could have been so much more gut wrenching if the focus was truly on Harrison Ford's character.

I remember catching this on telly a couple of times as a kid and being utterly captivated by it all. I didn't really know why then, and I don't really know why now. It has a unique atmosphere that locks you in, and you certainly feel as if you've been on a lengthy journey, but truth be told you're a tad bit short-changed by the end. Ford gets the "know-it-all who's sometimes right" role down to a tee but there's no progression: he's perpetually irritating, simply becoming more fanatical.

I haven't read the source material, but this is one of those movies that constantly feels like it has obviously distorted the point of the author to make it more palatable to the great unwashed. As soon as "meh" becomes a registrered adjective, all review books and sites will list this movie as being just that.

Eventually an innovator will corrupt his own utopia, a rich conflict that gives this modern Aguirre its edge and Ford the stimulus for arguably the most intricate of all his performances. As a character of grandiose extremes, he enlivens this messy, esoteric voyage into the jungle.

Not bad, but a case of wasted potential. As a Herzogian journey of a self-righteous madman, it doesn't go quite far enough and seems watered down. Ford appears to be holding back without really exploring the darkness of the character. The film flirts with some compelling themes but always seems to veer off into adventure mode when things start getting real. Still, the plot elements are solid and one's interest in the various situations is maintained. The music and cinematography are quite fine.

Ford takes his role pretty seriously and managed to make his eccentric character at least somewhat likable.

I like this movie. Not all parts, but mosts. And I really like River Phoenix, by the way.

Always skipped watching this for some reason. Anyways, Weir is a solid if not safe director and Ford is capable in a fairly challenging role, and the supporting cast is solid. Yet, the whole thing kinda feels like it doesn't go far enough. Allie is an asshole and clearly mentally unbalanced but I feel like it wallowed in the same level of goofiness, then decisions are made as if it was more. I dunno, it's definitely not bad, just felt kinda lackluster.

Harrison Ford and Helen Mirren are good in this story about a quirky genius inventor driven to build a utopia for himself and his family in the wilds of the jungle. The journey is intriguing as he succeeds in setting up a new community with many clever inventions, but disaster finds them when armed bandits come and spoil their peaceful existence. After which their situation steadily declines. Common sense gives way to stubborn pride which leads to disaster.

Not one of Ford's crowning moments. We get the point, eveyone is crazy.

Really boring. It has some decent moments, but the film comes off as rather preachy. Ford's character never became as crazy as I expected and I actually thought River Phoenix was the best here. I just wasn't convinced in Ford's portrayal of a intelligent, but irrational character.

I watched it 6 months ago, and I still don't know how I feel about it. Technical side of it is very good - it's Peter Weir film, after all. The story is not so easy for me to decide on. Right after seeing this film I asked myself, what was the point of this film? The mere fact that I still remember this film well after all this time shows that there is something different about it.

Pretty decent movie, although the premise is dynamite and I'm certain it could have been made into something much better. Both Weir and Schrader had done better, that's for sure. Harrison Ford has got a lot of personality, just not that of an eccentric inventor. He's a character actor and Allie Fox is not his type. Phoenix and Mirren work pretty well though. Watch for Jason Alexander in a tiny role right at the beginning.

This seemed like a strange pairing of director and screenwriter, but it ultimately makes sense. The Weir brand of a slight sense of whimsy and adventure in finding oneself mixed with Schrader's misanthropic exploration of disillusioned characters is further complemented by possibly Ford's best performance, who drives forward this tale of a man discovering how susceptible he is to the failings he once criticised. Fun and engaging film, wish Mirren had more to do, though.

The brilliant inventor understands much about machines, but virtually nothing about human nature and certainly nothing about himself. The film traces the desperate results of such naivete, as seen from the perspective of his young teenage son. Phoenix's occasional voice over narration imbues the movie with a sense of broken memory, casting a pall of sadness over the whole thing that complicates even those early scenes of hope for a new life in the jungle.

An intriguing setup leads to a one-note movie. Ford's character is a destructive prick with zero humility or self-awareness, and Mirren is a pushover who is along for the doomed, impulsive ride. Here is a case where more filmmaking style would have lead to a more enjoyable experience.

It is refreshing to see Ford play a character that is unlikable, but he probably isn't allowed to go far enough. Everything is almost compelling but falls short of really examining Ford's hypocritical social views. Weir's delightful photography is completely engrossing in this jungle setting to give a real sense of adventure, even if I wish there was more meat on bone.
