Not bad, but a case of wasted potential. As a Herzogian journey of a self-righteous madman, it doesn't go quite far enough and seems watered down. Ford appears to be holding back without really exploring the darkness of the character. The film flirts with some compelling themes but always seems to veer off into adventure mode when things start getting real. Still, the plot elements are solid and one's interest in the various situations is maintained. The music and cinematography are quite fine.

Weir has two types of movies; there is one that delves deep into the core of various cultures, and the other, this being an example, concerns one man alienating himself from his life to try and achieve a greater purpose. This one sort of succeeds, but could have been so much more gut wrenching if the focus was truly on Harrison Ford's character.

Harrison Ford is a good madman.

A reminder to how much we lose as film-goers with Harrison Ford and Peter Weir working so little.

Ford takes his role pretty seriously and managed to make his eccentric character at least somewhat likable.

I haven't read the source material, but this is one of those movies that constantly feels like it has obviously distorted the point of the author to make it more palatable to the great unwashed. As soon as "meh" becomes a registrered adjective, all review books and sites will list this movie as being just that.

I like this movie. Not all parts, but mosts. And I really like River Phoenix, by the way.

I remember catching this on telly a couple of times as a kid and being utterly captivated by it all. I didn't really know why then, and I don't really know why now. It has a unique atmosphere that locks you in, and you certainly feel as if you've been on a lengthy journey, but truth be told you're a tad bit short-changed by the end. Ford gets the "know-it-all who's sometimes right" role down to a tee but there's no progression: he's perpetually irritating, simply becoming more fanatical.

Always skipped watching this for some reason. Anyways, Weir is a solid if not safe director and Ford is capable in a fairly challenging role, and the supporting cast is solid. Yet, the whole thing kinda feels like it doesn't go far enough. Allie is an asshole and clearly mentally unbalanced but I feel like it wallowed in the same level of goofiness, then decisions are made as if it was more. I dunno, it's definitely not bad, just felt kinda lackluster.

Underrated film that is actually less a typical adventure genre piece and something more akin to Herzog or even early Malick. Soundtrack, location shooting and cinematography. Characters are archetypes. Flaws are obvious but mostly unimportant.

Eventually an innovator will corrupt his own utopia, a rich conflict that gives this modern Aguirre its edge and Ford the stimulus for arguably the most intricate of all his performances. As a character of grandiose extremes, he enlivens this messy, esoteric voyage into the jungle.
