Although it is very dated (Fay Wray's character - good lord), and there is some very hammy acting on show, this remains rather enjoyable, with some genuinely tense moments towards the end. Worth an hour or so of your time.

This could have been great but bad acting and its short length keep it at pretty good. The premise is very interesting, but so much more could have been done to build atmosphere both before and especially during the hunt and Wray is completely wasted. Still, the hunt is very tense and the film is quite enjoyable.

Wonderful. Bad, good, effective, and dated all at the same time.

Dated in many respects (especially Fay Wray's character), and the very short length hurts it more than helps. Otherwise, it's good, and the hunt scenes are wonderfully tense and exciting.

Dreadful acting from everyone except Joel McCrea, and some horribly outdated sexual politics (Fay Wray's character, utterly useless for anything but screaming, becomes the prize). Despite these flaws, an exciting movie that moves at a breakneck pace. Barely a second is wasted.

Fun and effective telling of the classic story, shot at the same time and on the same sets as KING KONG.

Feels a lot like King Kong which was being shot at the same time with much of the same crew. This might be the first American film about a serial killer and his pathology, and the film was pretty racy for its time (note the implication that Zaroff achieved a sexual release from hunting). It's a little corny by today's standards, and Zaroff has the fakest Russian accent ever (and he certainly must be insane to wear a black turtleneck in the tropics).

A decent adaptation of a fine short story - but I had expected it to be better.

Over-acting abounds, with Leslie Banks the main culprit. His Russian accent sounds a lot like Aleksandr the Meerkat, and I swear he slips into a Scottish brogue on more than one occasion. That said, the final twenty minutes or so - once "the game" begins - are quite exciting, and there's a real sense of dynamism and danger, enhanced by the energetic music. Overall, it's corny-but-fun, and only a shade over an hour long.

Read the story, it was good but not really a classic. Watched the movie...well, why is this so loved also? Maybe I need to watch it alone instead of with my 9th grade English class, but I still can't see me liking it that much more.

Very much a classic in most respects. Though movies from this era don't age well as a rule, this one is still more than watchable and quite fun. The portrayal of Zaroff is spot-on. A fun short story that was turned into a more than cool little movie. Worth a watch.

The art direction in this is beautiful and the story's told faithfully enough so I was entertained. Yeah, it's sexist and there's an ethnic villain with a goatee and the acting is horrible but this is classic hollywood so I'll let it pass. It makes me want to see King Kong.

psychopathic russian murderer and would-be rapist hunts down a big strong western guy and a screaming submissive barbie doll. the original short story is a simplistic allegory without anything else going for it, and this adaption doesn't add much in the way of pleasures. sure, it isn't boring, but "not boring" is a pretty low bar to aim for.

Bad acting, bad writing, bad editing. The sets are great but it doesn't hold up in any other sense. Its brevity is more of a hindrance than anything.

A exciting human horror hunt where Joel McCrea & Fay Wray have to run from the madman played by Leslie Banks in his first major role. It's got all the elements of 'B' suspense flick, but surprisingly well executed and very direct to the action without much staling. It's a movie thats easy to like if you like these kinds of crazy plots. Very entertaining movie that used a lot of the sets from King Kong which was made parallel to this one.

It occupies the same territory as King Kong and the Universal Horror films, though it's obviously lesser, but it maintains a quietly chilling mood similar to those films. It's also total camp, including hilarious overacting and absurdly dramatic music cues, but that only makes it more enjoyable.

love the movie, because it is so realistic and not so over the top as the modern versions of this movie are. this makes it so creepy, at least for me.

This was a film burdened with over melodramatic acting from Leslie Banks and Robert Armstrong, and a wasted performance by Fay Wray. The storyline must have been frightening back in 1932, unfortunately, the acting borders on camp, and this leaves the film utterly devoid of realism.

A bit slow, despite the hour-long running time, at least for the first two thirds or so. The action and suspense sequences show their age. Still, the premise is fun, and the art direction is awesome.

If you've read the classic short story, you know damn well that a chick just doesn't belong in this kind of tale, even if it's Fay "Get your hands off me, you big ape" Wray. It's still watchable, but there's just too much Hollywood baloney pollution

I watched this one when I was younger, about 15 or 16 and it was on TV in the middle of the night, I didn't remember its name and found it recently-ish. Thinking about it, it actually is a bit like Hostel minus the gore and violence on screen, but the concept is there. Apart from that, I don't remember too much apart from that the owner of the castle was really crazy.

Take a short story that wasn't all that great to begin with and have Hollywood add a stereotypical dim-witted broad and you get this thing. Reading about Rainsford's attempts to outwit Zaroff wasn't too bad, but waching him do it while dragging a woman along behind him was taxing. The only reason I rated it this high was because it's only an hour long. Points for brevity.

Bad acting, worse dialogue, stupid characters, groan-worthy comic relief, some of the most hilariously staged fight sequences you'll ever see...but, it's neither boring nor long, and it repurposes the killer sets from King Kong, so it's not a total loss.

At first I was impressed and perplexed by the way Russians and women are portrayed in this movie. Then I noticed how many clothes one had to wear back in the 1930s to appear properly dressed. Next, I had to laugh a lot about the puns and wittiness of old-school American English. It was only on my way home that I realised how well this movie pinpoints the question of human dignity and who deserves it.

It only takes about ten minutes to read the original short story, so there's a bit of filler here, mostly in the opening where the foreshadowing is overpowering. Having said that, I still wish they had spent a little more time in "the chase" half as that's what keeps the flick interesting, even mildly gripping.

An exciting premise, but pretty bad in almost everything else. There's no room for proper character or plot development, but the running time is clearly not the only problem.

Holds up fairly well, considering it's nearly a century old, but there's little depth. Our shipwrecked protag quickly gets over the deaths of his "best friends" once he finds refuge and Fay Wray, naively pleasant until explicitly met with the hidden intent of his host. We then move full throttle into a battle of good vs. evil, with the helpless damsel caught in the midst. It can be quite static visually, but there are some nice matte shots and the final chase is ahead of its time.

Even by the standard of its time, this movie crash lands on So-Bad-It's-Good Island. Look no further than the extras unenthusiastically uttering "It got me" before submerging to their implied shark-ridden fates.

You can tell the movie suffered after multiple rewrites taking the origin story and switching the subject to hunting man whereas originally (and twenty-nine years later most brilliantly presented in Robert Resson's The Hustler) the most dangerous game is billiards.

The 1930s rendition of "The Most Dangerous Game" unfolds with the trappings of a classic horror film, complete with an eerie castle and an imposing manservant. The centerpiece of this chilling atmosphere is the flamboyantly menacing Count Zaroff, whose presence drips with an unsettling aura. While the initial setup, with its suspenseful tone, outshines the actual hunt, the film doesn't rise above the ordinary.
