“My 88 year old penis still has some fight in it. You will know my mule.” Eastwood looks like he is about to shatter at any second.

As long as the focus is on the drug running, this is just fine. The stuff with the familiy, though, is mostly lousy - especially Wiest's performance.

Suffers just a tad from slow pacing like most of Eastwood's directed movies. I can't say it isn't a good movie though. It's fairly unpredictable and he is pretty fun to listen to, especially when communicating with foreigners for some reason… good cinematography and directing and I also liked most of the acting. It may seem like some standard Clint Eastwood fair to some but it's pretty well made as a whole.

again eastwood pleas with a declining america to veer from his own regrettable path, complicating symbols of the american dream without stripping them of their innate allure, unmasking oblivious privilege and misplaced priorities on both a personal and institutional level. he doesn't always give the viewer enough credit, and i'd prefer a harsher ending and less shitty grandad jokes, but even so nobody understands and critiques the US from the inside quite like clint.

Something akin to a more elderly, more mild-mannered Breaking Bad compressed into two hours. Despite a touch of violence and menace here and there it’s an overall relaxed and easygoing watch, anchored by Clint’s understated performance and lean, unshowy directing style. It kind of feels like it lets off the gas pedal right when it should step down at the end though; the dying old lady drama and kind of anticlimactic ending brought my score from a solid 7 down to a 6.

Quietly effective and nicely cast, although some of it came across as a bit implausible, and some of the family scenes weren't hugely interesting. Eastwood is very impressive, however, and his performance probably makes the film more powerful and thoughtful than it otherwise might have been. Decent.

I don't know if Clint Eastwood plays an old kook so well because he's a great actor or because he's an old kook himself now. Either way, he's a joy to watch here. The Mule's plot is nothing special and definitely takes some creative liberties with how cartels operate, but it's a surprisingly good movie. Small touches like Eastwood's character's fondness for flowers and his desire to travel off the beaten path, in spite of the risks of his new occupation, really breathe life into this script.

I find it hard to rate this film - on one end I find most of the subplots and characters boring, but Eastwood's character is intriguing especially considering the mythos behind his film legacy. I would rate this highly if it were purely on the merits of his character and how well it shapes the hard-hitting climax/ending, but it doesn't salvage what is ultimately rote and rudimentary filmmaking. I'd look at this as a mediocre film that manages to serve as a fantastic character study of its lead.

Checks all the boxes for an aged film director in that there's a lot of discussion about their place in the world, what has passed them by socially/politically/personally, their loneliness and lastly and most importantly their horniness. Sad sad picture

Like all modern Clint Eastwood films, it's another "old people are valuable and young people are the ones screwing it all up" rhetoric-driven creation. The first and third acts elicit many eye rolls but the second act is legitimately great and fun to watch, with some great shots of the open road

I'm not sure if I should give this a thumbs up or thumbs down. I had a few good laughs, both intentional and unintentional, but aside from that the movie comes across a very bleh. Scenes just kinda happen. Character motivation is either nonsense or nonexistent. There was nothing that was painful or unwatchable, but nothing good either.

Standard regretful-old-man drama is bolstered by the welcome return of Clint to the big screen. Time has not really diminished his presence or skill, at least not in front of the camera, and there is a certain fascination in watching him play a man who is forced to become a drug mule in his twilight years out of sheer desperation, but his direction is rote and the narrative decisions are purely by the book. Lacking an element of surprise, it simply goes through the motions and never takes off.

This film has the distinction of being the last 2018 film I will watch prior to doling out my movie awards for the year. You'll be able to find those by searching Library Chess Productions on YouTube. As for the movie, Eastwood gives a solid performance in a movie that I'm sure aspired to be better than it wound up being. That's not a huge criticism, as I still enjoyed it, but I was left with a sense of "I'm not sure that's how the cartel works" by the end. A decent film to cap an average year.

Eastwood the veteran actor does all he can to save the film and turn into a fascinating look at an aging man looking to finally gain the affection of his family. It falls apart mid way through the second act when zero of his relationships are awarded enough definition and are glossed over for the sake of reminder. Had writer Nick Schenk focused more on those dynamics the final act could have been more powerful. The drug run montages hurt because thanks to the title we already knew the plot.

It's a pleasure to see Clint on the big screen again and while he still has charisma, he is also not afraid to show himself as a fragile old man. Thematically, the film belongs to the same series as Unforgiven, Million Dollar Baby and Gran Torino before it, but it's also a simpler and lesser film. Clint is playing an older version of his usual character and at times both he and the film feel out of place and out of time; it's part of the charm but maybe it also signals an end of an era.

SPOILERS. It's no surprise that Clint's redeemed in his family's eyes (far too quickly btw) & having him be killed by the mob would've probably been more impactful, but that would also be predictable, so in its own way that's a good move. Overall, that might be the best way to describe this mostly absorbing drama - the redemption arc isn't a surprise at all, but it takes an unexpected route getting there even when it gets implausible (do drug lords really invite their top mules over to party?)

As usual Clint Eastwood provides a good character study into his own character while neglecting all the others around him. You can literally summarize the others: Mexican drug lord, ex-wife, wishful granddaughter (more like a great-granddaughter!), cartel goons, snitch...the plot isn't any deeper either. If the bad guys are keeping careful watch on him, why do they bother paying him so much? I also expected threats to his family which didn't happen. Fav scene: social commentary w/profiling?

Passable drama coasts on the good will inherent in seeing Eastwood directing his favourite actor once again, and the novelty of his performance as a character in dangerously over his head. Skirts credibility in its depiction of law enforcement, as well as some very naïve drug dealers; did Earl *have* to indulge in so much extraneous race-baiting? A well-stocked supporting cast is given little to do, bar Wiest delivering the first painfully overwrought and unconvincing performance of her career.

The one thing I thoroughly enjoyed is how the protagonist moves in the flow of life. I don't mean the whole job over everything thing, but easiness of making decisions, having fun at little things and generally just being there, in the moment. But goddamn wife (Wiest) - how shockingly awful role that was, my god, it single handedly ruined the movie for me, hard to take it seriously. Ugh. I will never understand why they did that. Most of character dependance doesn't look natural. Odd goodbye.

Surrounded by three generations of resentment-filled harpies, an old man hits the road. Presumably we’re supposed to sympathise with their feelings of having been neglected in favour of work and their requirement that the husband and father sacrifice himself on the altar of family, but prison still comes across as more of a relief than anything else, allowing him to return to the apparent sin of pursuing his gentle passion. A fairly present ride but the familial themes are just too roughly hewn.

Almost shockingly disappointing. A screenplay and plot not remotely worthy of its strong cast, though the chemistry between the actors makes this at least a passable film, but it's hard not to notice that every female character is basically a cartoon, though Dianne Wiest tries her hardest.

Yeah I get it Clint: you don't like tech and you love family (and this paternalistic message it's getting ridiculously redundant). But this doesn't mean that you can't hire a decent writer. Which cartel leaves its best driver with the same car every run? The screenplay is managed horribly

I very much enjoyed this film, as its not purely a crime drama type watch but its also a good character based drama. There are amusing moments as well as the more gritty scenes and I certainly found myself feeling quite concerned for the main character, for his safety and the film has some plot twists which also caught me emotionally. I felt it was a really quite engrossing watch, an entertaining film, which I believe is based on a similar true story. I recommend this film.

While Eastwood takes a crazy premise and makes it feel surprisingly fleshed out and real, given his directorial past, I can't help but wonder if his time would have been better spent elsewhere. He has a talent that goes far beyond acting, and only so much time left. Still, "The Mule", is incredibly watchable and entirely gripping.

The only thing I could think of the entire time was, "Damn Clint Eastwood looks old" Then I started thinking about how I'm getting older, and maybe I should do all the things I want to before I die. I’d understand why this might be a bit marmite for some, but if you’re in the right mood it’s a well-paced film with a nice ambience throughout. The premise has potential, and better writing could have created something far more memorable (linger on the story and very little of it makes much sense, with inconsequential scenes aplenty - the ‘plea’ finale definitely could’ve been left out too). Clint’s work in front of and behind the camera stands out again – even pushing 90 he’s still got it.

Ever seen a film about cops trying to catch drug dealers? About 100 times? Ever go to that old mall at the edge of town on a beautiful day and watch as the single, senile, geriatric people walk in laps because they're too afraid of the outside world-never thinking twice about all the time they've clocked in? Ever watch paint dry? Sometimes watching the elderly wander about or that dumb movie for the 101st time, or just zoning out doing nothing at all is alright enough. The Mule is alright enough

What kind of man doesn't show up to his daughter's wedding? Why are you stopping on the side of the highway with a bag of drugs in your truck? Will somebody in this cartel please get the top drug mule a rotation of vehicles? I get it Clint, you're a grumpy old man who doesn't like technology, but your manhood still works. The screenplay is absurd, and I can feel it churning along. The whole thing is stiff, the drama is stale, and the two sides of the story don't mesh.
