It boasts some big names, but didn't quite have the writing to make it worth a note. Tracy and Stewart have movies out there that are ten times better, so pass on this one unless you are a really big fan.

A brisk, mostly enjoyable mystery with a strong performance from Tracy. Stewart is also in a small role (his first in a feature), making it one of only a handful of films including both Tracy and Stewart. While this is a good concept and there are some clever ideas, the delivery is somewhat botched and they telegraph the twist way too much, at least to modern eyes. Maybe it was surprising then. This is the kind of obscure good concept film that could benefit from a remake instead of classics.

There is something lacking in the writing to knock one down emotionally, but there are so many other qualities here that The Murder Man becomes a highly watchable movie without draining your feelings. For one is Spencer Tracy's very mellow drunken portrayal of the Star reporter. Tracy is excellent when toned down. Virginia Bruce as his semi-love interest looks the screen blond anyone would want. And then you have for many the main attraction. James Stewart is his feature film debut!
