Always a pleasure to see a monster movie with a hit-you-over-the-head moral (science can't solve all humanity's problems), but this one takes a subtle jab at foreign occupation as well. While some of the effects are hokey, a few are pretty good; it just feels like they wanted to get in too much and ran out of time and budget.

Supremely silly sci-fi with almost zero filler between action and necessary plot points. I’m reminded how much Ishiro Honda must have learned from his years of AD work under such greats as Akira Kurosawa, Mikio Naruse, & (I only recently learned) Sadao Yamanaka, in his final film, Humanity and Paper Balloons. Worth a watch for even the snobbiest of arthouse crowds imo.

The battles are not really a strong point, considering they are largely made up of repetition. It wanted to show the futility of what they were doing, but there's a more cinematic way to do it that doesn't bore the viewer. Sloppy acting, a pretty interesting story that isn't that developed. Corny special effects. You might think that I didn't like this from all I've said, but despite everything, I was entertained. You have to approach it knowing these things.

This is actually one of the better Japanese 50's sci-fi films that I've seen. It has surprisingly good FX; miniatures mixed with live-action, plenty of vehicles, flame throwers etc. Sure, it's outdated in many places and the Mysterians look like goofy power rangers, but that's part of the charm. Even if they turn out to have a sinister motive, the film has a nice message and pre-date many of it's American peers.

Basically 1 hour-plus of organized warfare. If that's the kind of thing you like, this is the sort of thing you will like. ;)

Enjoyable spectacle that satisfies in terms of silly yet impressive visual effects and amazingly blunt sermoning but falls flat with one critical aspect: the absurdly wacky melodrama. Sadly that gets replaced with some boring scenes of dudes (usually politicians or science-people behind desks) desperately failing to explain anything relevant. Still fun though.

Toho's unmemorable alien invasion film. It starts off strong with a giant robot that attacks a city (though the movie seems confused by how big the robot really is - one second it looks larger than buildings and the next only slightly larger than a human), but then the plot bogs down with the humans trying to figure out whether to appease the invaders or not and attacking them in overly repetitive battle scenes. This tedium causes the movie to fall flat in both the second and third acts.

I like the goofy plot. Not so much the long action scenes.

The Toho Sci-Fi factory churns out another okay but not great film. The giant robot is largely pointless and the themes are presented with a lack of subtlety that would make Oliver Stone proud, but it's also bonkers enough that it's still fun.

A highly entertaining sci-fi flick from Honda and co. The scenes of combat can become monotonous, but otherwise the film kept my interest. The musical score is really cool.

The world needs more silly sci-fi movies. Some of the special effects are laughable, yet some of them are actually pretty good. I also liked the set design a lot. It's a fun little flick, although the action does get repetitive... even at its short length, another 10 minutes could have been cut to tighten some scenes up. Also the message could have used SOME subtlety, but perhaps it's better to just come right out and say it rather than try to veil it under your flimsy allegory.
