Nothing like Fantastic Four disaster or Dark Phoenix mashup here.. The New Mutants is a weak attempt, can not close it's potential to say the least, but at least it's a compact, smooth movie which have some intriguing elements in it..

Compared to the MCU, X-Men have been falling behind in relevance, and while I respect the efforts to reinvent the series, and was pretty thrilled by the prospect of flirting with horror. This is a flaccid attempt that falters, it caters to teens too much to be genuine horror.

Nothing about it is overtly bad but man, it is mediocre right down to the bones. Read up on the production history and you'll find out why: this is a movie that was compromised, watered down and kicked from one indifferent corporation to another until there was nothing left. This could have been such straightforward fun with a bit of bite to it but it's almost shocking how flat and uninteresting it turned out. Props to Anya Taylor-Joy, the only thing in this movie that "pops" at all.

As a fan of the 80s comic it feels odd to watch the characters in a horror film - because they are so faithful to Claremont's originals. Even the lesbian relationship at least feels like the kind of thing Claremont would've liked to write as opposed to the usual Woke Hollywood virtue signaling. It's also easy to imagine Claremont writing this kind of "trapped" storyline. This probably won't spawn more hybrids but works well enough & becomes genuinely surprising & exciting in the last 20 mins

The New Mutants isn't actually that bad, but it lacks a conviction to any genre leaving itself in a No Man's Land of mediocrity and forgettability. I liked the cast, but the decision to have so many bad accents was distracting. The theme of conquering your fear is so heavy-handed it almost renders the film comedic. There are elements of creeping horror, teen lesbian romance and ensemble superhero action, apathetically incorporated into a film that ultimately suffers from weak direction.

there is way more Buffy the Vampire Slayer in this movie than I'd ever have anticipated. also for the love of god Hollywood please cool it with that whole "there are two wolves/bears/animals battling inside of usssss" business.

New mutants is exactly how you'd expect it to go. not that imaginative, or evolved far from 90s TV fare like Generation X. The X-Men franchise goes out with a whimper.

The film just wasn't quite sure what it wanted to be. There are some good moments, but largely it doesn't do much. Might have benefited with more of a connection to the X-Men franchise, but I'm not even sure if that would have helped (and what was Anya Taylor-Joy's character's power? I'm still confused about that)

I didn't know anything about these characters so I feel like there was not enough backstory for me to become invested in them. It was like watching a jail/reform school slice of life movie but just limiting it to 5? 6? characters in the entire institution was very claustrophobic. The tone of the movie turns to horror in the final act but I can't say I know what the plot was. Too bad there won't be a follow-up. Fav scene: when the creepy smiley with sharp teeth shows up in the real world.

Always intrigued when we get a horror-tinged superhero movie but it's a case of Fantastic Four (2015), just not as bad. There's a good, scary, psychological tale to tell here and it had a decent amount of intrigue... but it felt so bland. That's not to say there aren't a few alright scenes, but there wasn't a lot of connection between anything. Very much a victim of its development cycle, would have liked to see this in the hands of a singular, competent vision.

As a young, queer woman, the gay love story was a nice surprise...I just wish the character development was a bit better. I found It hard to really care for any of these characters especially Dani who is pretty underwhelming. All of the actors are doing their best with what they've been given. This movie didn't get particularly interesting until the last 20 minutes, but I still found myself enjoying it more than Dark Phoenix. All in all, just a bit of an underwhelming disappointment.

I have to admit, making the connection to where in the universe New Mutants fits was exciting for me, and I'm intrigued by the horror element this brought. I've also reached the point where, if Anya Taylor-Joy is in a movie, I'm predisposed to liking it (aka The Seyfried/Moore/Chastain Treatment). This is far from perfect -- falling victim to the "Meaningless Racism To Make Audience Hate Character" trope like three times, among other narrative problems -- but in a vacuum, this was entertaining.

They are just REALLY comfortable making garbage movies after the returns from all the last X-men movies. They offer no illusions that this is a good movie. Just trying to get people in the theater, and more content for streaming - stat. Unfortunately for them COVID ruined their money grab, and this will go down as a critical and box office flop. What a tragedy.

The plot is built out of parts of other movies, but the elements never sit well together. A lot seems to have been borrowed from "One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest", but nobody seems to have thought that the patients in that movie don't have mutant powers, so they were a lot easier to discipline. Our Nurse Ratched figure in this film orders kids into their rooms, when the kid could easily just level the whole building.

I truly appreciate filmmakers' efforts for trying to breathe new life into the mutant genre, but I have to know, whose idea was it exactly to turn Madonna's "Papa Don't Preach" music video into a full length movie?

Anya Taylor-Joy as Magick was really cool but was given nothing to do for most of the movie. Too bad we'll never see her as the character again. The only setpiece, a 15-minute fight at the end, is also the only reason to watch this. Feels like just the first act of a story stretched out to feature length.

The seams still show where scenes have been cut, with no graceful patches. This Frankenstein style of editing complements the genre well, and serves as a replacement for terror as you wait for the few and far between scare scenes (my favorite being when the doors of a confessional flapped furiously while an angry voice yelled at us -- funniest thing I've seen since Borat).

It's an overall interesting concept watching young people come to terms with their powers having caused such tragedies, but the idea of it being a hospital for them to get better would have worked much more had it not been so obviously suspicious and ominous. Also, I get her tragic backstory, but why did Illyana have to be so aggressively unlikeable? Decent premise, characters and acting, faulty execution and weak tonal consistency. Overall, maybe worth one watch, but no more.

The restrained, single-location horror-vibe is a neat take, but as it plays out the tone shifts to coming-of-age and by the final act it's just generic super-hero territory with a giant, lame CGI monster. It has its moments, but it never breaks past the surface of average. If the lead wasn't so awful, if it picked a tone and leaned into the horror, if it held its cards closer to its chest, if the score wasn't 100% uninspired, if the dialogue was better... If, if, if... Story of a million movies.

An uncommonly poor superhero "horror" film (that genre label is definitely a stretch) that's let down by its every facet. The screenplay is totally nonsensical and lacks any kind of forward momentum, which makes the brief runtime far more of a slog than it should have. The cast performances are all over the place, but most of them are uniformly terrible. I truly wanted to champion this as an interesting shake-up of the MCU formula, but there's nothing remotely new here and it's a total dud.

The lack of commitment to horror is disappointing, Roberto is a really bland and underdeveloped character, and the last act with the bear is pretty bad. That being said, it’s far more entertaining and interesting than Dark Phoenix, so there’s that at least. With a better script and a more focused approach, this could’ve been something special. As it is, it’s one of the weaker X-Men movies. Also, LGBT representation.

I had to see it to fulfill my needs for another X-Men movie, and to have another chance to see Anya Taylor-Joy on screen. Sadly, the movie felt totally underdeveloped. It's like this film had only 50% of necessary plot and character development. I sort of enjoyed the chill and dark atmosphere, but I would never say it is a horror movie. Sentinels can be more horrifying than this movie.

Hadn't the first clue about what this was about and what I ended up watching proved to be a fairly limp effort. I was intrigued when the narrative turned into horror, but when you only have about 6 characters and the audience realises you're not prepared to kill any of them off, all tension and interest evaporates quickly leaving virtually nothing but a fairly dull teen drama with a sprinkling of superpowers.

This X-men spin of title distinguishes itself from most superhero movies by inserting a heavy dose of horror into it. Which on itself is very admirable already. Combined with some relatable characters the movie worked well. Although some of the character remain underdeveloped and the plot predictable. I also liked it's only around 90 minutes long instead of many other bloated superhero movies.

It's not the X-men movie people expected, as it is rather small (not so over the top) and never leaves the building where it takes place. Still, it's not as bad as I expected given the reviews. In fact I don't even think it's the worst of the series (I save that prize for 'X-Men: Apocalypse')

This could've been a lot worse. I didn't go in with the highest expectations, but this proved to be a good time. The mixture of some soft horror elements lends surprisingly well. Much like something of a horror movie, it's contained and isolated setting makes the most of out of a superhero film with only 6 characters in its runtime. There are issues here, especially with how cliche it becomes, but there ain't a whole lot of superhero films like this, so I give it props.

It's a little disappointing to rate this so low because it felt like it was trying to go in a slightly different direction with the heavy horror theme. Unfortunately, there's a sense that a hundred people worked on the script and they randomly put those pieces together and tried to connect them with the barest of plot threads. Even the scary parts (such as they were) felt trite and dull.

Daha ziyade karakter tanıtımı gibi bir ilk film olarak düşünüldüğü için zaman zaman tempo çok düşse de verilen görev olarak bakarsak başarılı demek lazım. While not as utterly dire as the stories coming out of production would lead one to believe, it's not that good either. This attempt to make a teen horror movie out of the origin story does no favor for its actors or the source material, and there's a lot of discombobulated elements that make it just feel ultimately silly. Also, two scenes are telegraphed by playing clips from Buffy the Vampire Slayer TV show. Why? Anya Taylor-Joy is fun though.

Haunted house style horror from the Marvel Universe. The release had been delayed a few years, which would indicate they weren't too confident about how The New Mutants (2020) turned-out. And one can sense why. Not the worst of horrors, but it is underwhelming. especially when considering this was a X-Men spin-off of sorts.

Like a laced pilot of a superhero show with bad editing, ugly vfx, helpless acting, generic music, bland cinematography, unscary horror-elements, meaningless Breakfast-Club-inspired coming-of-age attempts, non-existent suspense, forced romance and something I'd almost not eveen dare to call „writing". I ran out of clever attributes, so as for the rest, I'll just have to say it also lacks structure, subtext, story, pacing and authenticity. And the sound is very subpar. In short: Nothing works

It's just middling. Weird that there was so much delay for this when the later new X-Men films got waved through to theatres, but that's the film business. The film itself has plenty of acting talent, lots of potential and does next to nothing with it. A bit of a shame.
