I watched this on a Friday night and then bought it the next day. Yeah, I loved it! I appreciate Gosling's Oscar nomination, but why wasn't he nominated for this? Completely different turn from him that made me laugh my head off. The two leads have some great chemistry and it pays off. Black's directing is pretty dang solid and the story and characters are all just hilarious. One of my new favorite comedies. If you missed this, you need to go back and watch it.

The Nice Guys is the type of movie that can get one excited about cinema. This is a fast-paced dark comedy featuring a ton of laughs, great characters and performances, just enough action and violence, and a more than serviceable plot, all wrapped up in a nice bow that keeps you smiling from start to finish. It's hard to ask our movies to be better than The Nice Guys; it's only a shame that a few of them even get close to that level of quality.

This movie is special. Gosling is hilarious, Crowe plays a wonderful (and violent) straight man, and the chemistry between them is undeniable. There are some great laughs here and coming out of the theatre I said that "it had enough successful jokes to be a good comedy" rather than only having a few and failing like so many, but even when it's not funny it's stylish and entertaining. Any flaws here are insignificant.

My score may be a bit inflated due to the sheer joy caused by the chemistry between Crowe and Gosling, but this is a fun, if both overlong and a tad undercooked, summer diversion that will hopefully stand out in a sea of sequels and reboots. Black's script is fun but a bit too clever for its own good, as most of the joy comes from the excellent interplay from the cast as they surf a complicated slice of noir. Essentially, I wanted to love it, but I came away liking it a lot - that's good enough.

Finally something that captures the fun mania and dark hilarity of Kiss Kiss Bang Bang, and it's fitting that it's Black who brings it successfully back. Crowe and Gosling are both terrific, playing off each other in sometimes masterful comedic timing. Good stuff.

It's not the same mile-a-minute one liner detective movie that Black did with "Kiss Kiss, Bang Bang" which ranked up in my top twenty movies of all time, but I'll be damned if Black can't make one hell of an awesome detective movie. Christ, this one is awesome, and I might be predisposed to like detectives, but Jesus fuck, I can't stop swearing at how much I fucking love it. Holy shit, fuck, it's good.

I guess I had low expectations (it doesn't help that in general I kinda dislike Crowe and expected Gosling to just play Coolguy McHunkyman) but all in all I had a fun time with this. It coasts along nicely, had a few 'oh damn!' moments and it's Shane Black-y as all hell.

This is an absolute riot. Shane Black does wonders with his direction of The Nice Guys, and his script is both funny and rich at the same time. The originality of this film is what propels it so well, as do the duo of Crowe and Gosling. They have really good chemistry as a comedic duo and turn in great performances here. Angourie Rice, who plays Gosling's daughter, is absolutely stellar here as well, performing way above her years. This is stylish and relentlessly funny filmmaking at its best.

Nestled somewhere between Kiss Kiss and the Last Boy Scout, Shane Black's newest film is what he does best: witty banter from seedy players. While it has some problems, all are overlooked owing to the main duo's awesome chemistry and the blistering pace of comedy. A ton of fun.

'Kiss Kiss Bang Bang' is one of my all-time favorite comedies. This isn't nearly as great in terms of writing - many of the jokes don't land. But I love the genre, and I liked the energetic lead performances. And Angourie Rice is definitely one to watch.

In 1970s Los Angeles, 1970s Los Angeles is unsurprisingly exactly like modern-day Los Angeles...but with more shag carpeting. Or was that less shag carpeting? The porn-stache is strong in this bad-trip/good-trip anti-detective movie starring everybody's favorite gladiatorial specimen and a pre-teen in pajamas because Hollywood.

It's a pleasure to have Shane Black back doing his thing. If you've seen his prior work, you know just what to expect: bumbling, incompetent protagonists cracking wise while blundering their way through a criminal conspiracy in Los Angeles while getting repeatedly shit on by seedy criminals and sarcastic women much smarter than them. And man, does 70s LA look like the best place in the history of ever here.

The Nice Guys is such a refreshingly original and well made piece of filmmaking from Shane Black. The overall direction, writing and the cinematography is on point throughout and the consistent offbeat humour appealed to me perfectly. Both Russell Crowe and even more so Ryan Gosling are great together and their natural chemistry and comic timing is measured to perfection. Angourie Rice is an equally worthy mention also. The Nice Guys is one of the most satisfying and entertaining films of 2016.

I'm not usually a fan of Crowe, and even less so of Gosling, but The Nice Guys is a film that is, at its core, funny. The plot while predictable is still interesting. The banter between the leads is great. None of the villains are compelling, though I suppose they're not supposed to be. The direction is middling, and personally I don't hold much/ any love for the 70's, but it still very watchable. Dark humour that makes for light entertainment.

The film is lifted by the chemistry between Crowe and Gosling, as well as Gosling's excellent comedic acting. The film wants to be a new era Chinatown, but isn't good enough to get to those heights. But, I am willing to overlook the film's shortcomings because of Crowe & Gosling.

I don't even care if I'm rating this too high. If this had come out in the mid-nineties, it would probably be ten points lower; but we live in the age of reboots, reimaginings, and sequels, and The Nice Guys falls under the teeny umbrella of excellent original content. Crowe and Gosling with Black's snappy writing are so good that they could, ironically, bring me back in the theatre for another raucous, hilarious joyride. I loved every second of this.

like its leads, this movie's not terribly incompetent. plot and pace went along well enough not to care how far-fetched everything was. the humor didn't work for me most of the time, and the "pacifist-junior-detective"-kid was mostly irritating. people in the theater seemed to enjoy themselves, though. there's a handful of really fun and different stuff (best part is gosling going downhill) but the rest is pretty lukewarm and forgettable.

Shane Black's latest crime-dark comedy teams together Gosling and Crowe in a sparkling, complementary fashion. The pace is fast, the action scenes are both dynamic and funny, and the plot is serviceable as the glue that holds together this romp through 70's iconography.

Starts sluggishly, and takes a little while to tune properly into the tone. Not helped by school project level incidental music on the theme of "detective". Shane Black is such a terrible director I don't understand how anyone likes this guy. Every joke has to get pointed out with neon flashing lights blinking around it. And Ryan Gosling is less terrible than usual, but made irrelevant by the fact that his character is basically a walking punchline the film illogically tries and shove humanity into. Watch Inherent Vice instead.

A fairly solid action caper with some chemistry between the leads, but not much more to offer. For me, the plot was just too nonsensical, too complicated, and full of random adrenaline-fuelled scenes, and the characters were not realistic enough. I never felt particularly amused or at ease with the characters and their quest. Obviously many people felt differently, but this is overrated in my book.

I was surprised so much by this movie. It probably made me laugh more, and more consistently, than any other movie released this decade. Crowe and Gosling have proven over and over to be great hollywood leads and this film is no different. Combining elements of noire and comedy this film excels due to the quick paced dialogue and the character development within the two leads. A solid film, easily one of the best of the year. I liked this a lot and it feels good to know that, occasionally, movies like this are still being made in Hollywood. I had a really good time. Ryan Gosling is hilarious in this, and Russell Crowe's pretty good too. I was also really impressed by young actress Angourie Rice, as well as Margaret Qualley, whom I've been a big fan of for a couple of years now. Great soundtrack, too. The only major thing that could make this movie better? It should've been a sequel to Kiss Kiss Bang Bang!

Well, I can see the flaws of this a half mile ahead, but it's so exactly up my alley I just don't give much of a crap. This is what Shane Black does and he's pretty much the best at doing it. Funny and charming, with terrific chemistry between the leads and Gosling proving himself excellent at phyiscal and verbal comedy. It's also something like the first Crowe movie worth seeing in at least 15 years, and with Basinger in tow you can draw some parallels to L.A. Confidential. A delight.

V amusing & archetypal Shane Black buddy 'cop' film 4 sure. Kiss Kiss was better tho. Think RDJ in KKBB simply more charismatic than Gosling & the Val K role = more interesting & memorable than Crowe's here. Yet, RC + RG have both charisma & chemistry = core of film. [RG truly is a chameleon & a great actor; able to convincingly BE anything. Not many can. Even many truly great actors, not just pretty stars, often have clear type/range. Hope he doesn't let $ -> leading man rut & waste talents]

There’s maybe a little something missing that keeps this film from hitting the Lethal Weapon 2/Beverly Hills Cop tier for me (maybe the film reel being a weak MacGuffin) but I definitely enjoyed the retro-cool vibe and snappy dialogue of it very much all the same. This is one of my favorite comedies in a long time. I love this concept and setting, and I don't think you could've done better than Gosling and Crowe as your leads. It's creative, cruel, and somehow light heartedly offensive, but I don't think you see Hollywood take these chances, and having Shane Black dips his toes into something like this was a real treat. It's at its best when it plays to into the more cliche society standards of the time, which really embraces this tone. Great.

The comedy and banter was just great. Gosling, Crowe, and the daughter (Rice) are all really good. Even though the plot was a little loosey goosey (and the film's biggest weakness), the writing was actually really good otherwise. So many times where throwaway lines actually set something up later on, themematic callbacks, etc.

Shane Black's "The Nice Guys" shines with all the best Shane Black-isms. It surprises me that Shane Black, a veteran of similar films, still manages to find fresh, new ways to make funny, action-packed movies. This one bursts with affection for the films that inspired it, from Chinatown to Pulp Fiction to Mulholland Falls to The Big Lebowski to Give 'em Hell, Malone. But behind the homages, it still stands as its own enjoyable story. The plot loses steam every now and then, but the charming dialog and Gosling's physical comedy make up for it.

Can't decide if Gosling is being type-cast in retro-style movies, or if the only movies he wants to do are retro-style movies. Actually, scratch that, I don't care. This was super fun. As are basically all of Gosling's retro adventures. Crowe is the perfect comic foil for the absurdity of Gosling's character; their double act is really the driving force of the movie, and everything feels just right. But the humor here made me more smile than outright LOL (although the repeated "n'stuff" callback got a chuckle). The "national malaise" years of late 1970s Los Angeles make the ideal setting for a hangdog detective story, and THE NICE GUYS offers a near-perfect balance of mystery and comedy. I'll give Black the benefit of the doubt about the holes in the plot, and assume that they were intentional, given that the film is more noir-y than KISS KISS BANG BANG--but still remarkably similar. You got to applaud Shane Black for doing this throwback to buddy-cop films after Iron-Man 3 and being offered truckloads of $$$. It will make a nice double feature with his Kiss Kiss Bang Bang, although this is closer to a comedy, and could have dropped some of the weaker jokes in favor of action. Still, I really dug the 70's setting/details, how Gosling & Crowe played together, and sharp writing which put a fresh spin on cliched scenes. A notch under KKBB for now, but might improve over time.
