This is a disturbing, effectively haunting little movie. Willams delivers a great restrained performance and Collette is amazing as Donna who is overly protective of a sick child or crazy in a way that will chill you to the bone. This is a great movie that more people should get to see.

It's a film with a slow-developing and fascinating build-up, and while it certainly does hold you with rapt attention, some viewers may find the lack of adequate payoff frustrating.

The direction was okay, the acting was great, too bad the story was lacking in just about every way.

Not quite as thrilling as I was hoping it would be. With Maupin and Williams attached, I expected a great deal more.

Robin Williams' dramatic work almost always impresses me. The movie is so-so, but to see him onscreen is a treat.

Slow, dull, and not-so-thrilling.

Only 75 mins and not a frame wasted. Great building of tension and close -almost claustrophobic- camera work. Interesting characters side-stepping enough clichés to feel fresh.

A serviceable mystery-cum-thriller - the type that you watch without any real complaint, then completely forget five minutes after the credits roll. The biggest flaw is that the main mystery revolves around whether the boy exists, yet we see certain parts of the film from his POV... that was never explained and is just left as a frustrating loose thread. I guess it tries to be enigmatic, but doesn't quite pull it off.

Good effort a very interesting cast but at the end, it is not that Thrilling or Mysterious, enjoyable, though.

"As far as topicality goes, The Night Listener's account of authorial deception certainly benefits from its parallels to the recent outing of JT Leroy as a fraud." - Nick Schager

Basically a thriller without the thrills and the script. Williams was basically wrong for this role and is out-classed by Toni Collete in every scene. One to avoid at ALL COSTS

Weird, and not good. But in the end there is still that little bit of you that felt there was something good in this film.

If it would not have been for Toni Collette's presence, this film would have been unbearable. Even so, its drawn out, anticlimactic plot just make it easy to pass up.
