The Night Of is an intelligently well balanced crime, prison & courtroom drama. The pilot and finale serve as perfect bookends for the consistent and compelling episodes inbetween that simmer and unfold brilliantly. The writing, direction and cinematography is on point throughout and the diverse cast is incredible. Riz Ahmed gives a well realised and developed performance and Bill Camp & Amara Karan impress also. But praise must go to John Turturro who's performance is of a different calibre.

Another good summer HBO mini-series. Never better than its first episode, which is chock full of wonderful flourishes, great little details that showed that cops and attorneys are just humans getting through their day, instead of the 24/7 superheroes they're usually depicted as.

This has one of the best pilots I have seen in a long time, but unfortunately the rest of the show fails to live up to it. A shorter running time, with more focused writing and a more consistent tone could have done much more with the talent that this series so clearly showcases in its first episode.

Rivals Mr Robot in its cinematography but for much different reasons. This is classic American filmmaking - imagine if The Wire had been shot by Frederick Elmes and Robert Elswit? Obviously not as narratively ambitious as the former; this is tight, lean writing from Price. Turturro and Ahmed are early Emmy front runners.

Rather solid crime series. Although it has a hard time juggling the two stories (which shouldn't be happening at the same time), they are both compelling -- the wonky injustice in the outside world and the assimilation into harsh prison life on the inside. The green color grading and derivative music may lead you to think this is like any other high-production series, but the level of acting and the carefully unsurprising storytelling sets it aside from its more sensationalised inferiors.

While still a familiar story line, its so well presented and acted that it feels fresh.

The thing that bothers me about this whole thing is how easily and quickly the characters become corrupted.

There's a few missteps with Karan's character and the depiction of prison life deserved a bit more fleshing out. But this is primarily about the investigation. Turturro's character, Det. Box, Jeannie Berlin - absolutely perfect. The ambiguous denoument. This really felt like Season 1 of a new The Wire. By itself, it's wonderful. If expanded, it could be magnificent. For 8 weeks, I couldn't wait to see what happened next and I was rarely frustrated by the answers. That's the best review possible.

The Night Of is a show about having eczema on your feet. Also, there is a murder. All joking aside, this is a very familiar story with some fresh writing and engaging characters. Watch it!

I typically don’t like crime dramas as they're often excessively melodramatic and dumbed-down, but this one’s different. This one avoids sensationalism and cliches and offers up a riveting (and horrific!) story with an honest look into the U.S. legal system. Zaillian perfectly crafts this series with help from an all around outstanding cast.

Very impressive but doesn't quite live up to the intial setup. Fantastic performances all around. Writing is great until it isn't. John Turturro's feet must smell bad.

The Night of takes all the pieces of a standard police show that were left out and weaves an amazing story from it. The way it is written is breathtaking as it gives the writers the opportunity to unfold it anyway they want. It is visually very compelling, with amazing acting through-out. I genuinely enjoyed it.

I am not an expert on law system in USA, but if it goes really something like this then it is really troublling. As for the show itself, Its a good stuff. Quality crime drama that presents the problems of legal system practically in its worse face. John Torturo delivers one heck of a performance.

A suspenseful and entertaining season 1. Characters managed to keep me engaged throughout.

Some weak writing during the court session episodes fail to deliver a believable crescendo to this well set up crime drama. I found the characters to be as intelligent as the plot needed them to be, which leads to an aggravating viewing experience. That said, TNO includes one of the more engrossing & gross sub-plots in a mini-series, the eczema plot line which seemingly concludes by the guidance of one of the better written & succinct characters.

It's rare to see such a well done show. Everything is nearing perfection: nuanced acting (especially by John Turturro and Riz Ahmed), multifaceted characters, gripping story line, atmospheric score by Jeff Russo, beautiful cinematography, and even a bit of humor. I felt moved during every episode. Naz's drastic arc from good boy to prison thug was heart-wrenching. "The Night Of" was such a treat.

I have to say I'm confused by the almost unanimous love for this series. I found it frustratingly and frequently contrived with characters constantly taking specific unrealistic actions that only served a dramatic narrative purpose. That said Turturro was the sole shining bright light, bringing regular humor to proceedings but also being the most effective dramatically. The ending was also better than I was expecting so TNO regained a few points for that. Not terrible, but mediocre in my opinion

Strong Wire (moral ambiguity, procedural, system critique, excellent characters) vibes but it's just another quality HBO mini series without being mind blowing.

The first episode is exceptional. And although the other episodes aren't quite as good, this is still a very strong miniseries from HBO, with excellent acting and photography. Even the minor characters are perfectly cast. John Turturro was already one of my favourite actors and his performance here confirms it yet again. Even the minor characters are perfectly cast.

Great cast, especially nice to see Peyman Moaadi from A Seperation. If the writing had a little extra something I would think this is great but as it is I find many facets of The Night Of to be only average to slightly above average. Certainly feels like a longer story than a feature film but not a big enough story to necessitate 8 parts, feels padded and stretched in more than a few places, I'll take 3 tight episodes over 8 loose ones. Feels inferior to many British crime series.

quality. amazing acting by everyone involved, shame the same can not be said about the writing (which, of course, was great mostly, but Chandra Kapoors way out ... how lazy was that?)

Grand opening, grand closing. But seriously, the first and last episodes are maybe the best TV I've ever seen in my life. So many great characters and sequences that manage to effectively tread a moral grey area. A must.

A really solid bordering on great combination of prison series (meh) and courtroom drama (woohoo). The highlight of the show is Turturro's beautiful closing statement. (1 season)

Jawdropping performances (barring one or two minor characters) really carry this by-the-numbers procedural above and beyond the usual dark and gritty true crime dirge.
