The Night of the Hunted

Terrible terrible acting. A nonsensical plot fully of interesting ideas that aren't fleshed out. The film is kind of a very watchable train wreck fully of unnecessary nudity and soft core sex scenes.

I thought this was supposed to be some sort of surreal horror movie instead it's a porno directed by a drugged up Cronenberg.

Reminded me of Cronenberg more than Rollin, which is not a bad thing.

Whenever the plot fades from the conservatively opaque into overwrought sentimentality it has the feel of a mystery torn apart at the seams. There's a whole landscape ripe with the ideas of memory loss, agency, emotional legitimacy, etc -- and while this film made use of a few of these in moderate quantities there's definitely a feel that the coarse aesthetics could have positively made use of the more creative aspects without degrading the fantastique cerebral experience.

Looks cheap even by Rollin standards since it's transposed from the usual decrepit gothic locations to a nondescript office building, but its all the more bleak for it. As others have said this could easily pass for 70s Cronenburg.

This movie moves from being a ludicrous soft core mystery into thinking it's a Melville movie complete with a gunned down rooftop scene. And somehow that's okay.
