The Night of the Sunflowers
Spanish thriller with a kaleidoscopic narrative that details six different views of the same event. A travelling salesman who turns out to be a serial rapist is the fuse that produces an explosion between three groups of people: the remaining inhabitants of a deserted village in Western Spain, a group of speliologists called in by the locals to investigate a newly discovered cave in the hope that it will bring tourism and prosperity to the area, and the young and old of the local constabulary.

Top badass moment? Well, that was rural. This movie is a proper, old-fashioned thriller. Sadly it gives very little screen time to any sunflowers, which is a shame as one is part of the logo for the Vegan Society; (although it's pretty ‘stylised’ in the current version.) Also, did you know that the pattern of seeds in a sunflower head is the most efficient that’s mathematically possible? But back to the movie - it's got some speleologists in it. No cats, chainsaws or decapitations.

Six overlapping narratives give a rich view of a single explosive day in rural Western Spain. Although the individual episodes can sometimes be given more room and seem a little unbalanced, it is testament to the quality of the script and the acting that the film produces an interesting commentary on rural poverty as well as a gripping storyline.

A noirish tale in a small Spanish mountain village that heads in a completely unexpected direction. Low key, it gets you thinking.
