Leave aside the horrendous sound editing (which is awful for all romanian films of the era), and welcome the bitter-black drama. This film punches you in the stomach with every new slice of the early-90s romanian life. If you've been there, you know it's not a far fetched depiction. Sometimes, it's all so absurd that it becomes comical. Maia rules, Vasilache rules, Pintilie rules. YES PLEASE.

This is relentless in bringing down the main character, showing Romania as a grungy dysfunctional dystopia where you can only survive by giving in to the madness and laughing at the absurdity. It's rather amazing that it can work so well and actually have a number of funny moments amid the misery, but it does.

This is a masterpiece. Performances by Morgenstern and Vasilescu are amazing. This movie is difficult or impossible to understand for viewers not familiar with Romanian history and specifics though.

Now this is a film with soul and character! Wonderful, a joy to watch! Explosive, unpredictable and visually stunning. Gives a unique insight in Romanian history. Incredible roles and acting. Comical and ironic. The factory shot is one of the most beautiful shots ever recorded on film. I love how the story untangles and you begin to understand it all.
