This film is such a milestone that it's a shame that it will probably never be screened again in it's original IMAX format. Petrov's animation technique involves oil painting on glass, which most animation geeks are familiar with. When combined with IMAX the result is stunning... (Amazon.com)

More visually stunning on screen than it was in my head while reading the book, which is saying something. The distinctive animation style works well, whatever the hell it is. (Looks like a slide show of paintings..?) Even so, the voice acting wasn't up to snuff and I don't think this story can be told in 18 minutes.

Although I can understand its short length, I wish something like this could go on for a lot more.

The animation is beautiful. The voice acting is a mix of horrible (the boy) and good (the old man) and, since it's a quick, gorgeous watch, you're left wishing it was so much longer. Either way, it's a great adaptation. I'm impressed.

Magnificent. Simple voice acting, superb story retold in a unique way.

It sure is pretty to look at, but it's surprisingly lifeless for a film that purports to be some kind of insight into the human condition.

Such a beautiful film, every second is a gorgeous painting. Even the stuff that the old man goes through is impactful, watching him struggle near the end was heartbreaking. However, what keeps this from being a 9 is just how silly the boy's voice acting is. The old man's is fine, though not stellar, yet the boy was dreadful and did what he could to ruin a scene. Luckily, he could not, but it's a shame that the performances weren't better.

Despite the remarkably painterly and meticulous animation, the overall impression is rather that it is somehow both too lifeless and too pompous.

Oh beautiful animation, how lovely you would have been without that incessent, unnecessary and lazy voice acting and narration. How I longed for a moment of silence.

There was either too much dialogue, it was poorly acted, or some combination of both. The animation was great though and it hit all the main themes of the book.

Unfortunately, its beauty is a bit on the wall calendar side.

Poorly-acted dialogue is the only blemish on a beautiful animation.
