Sluggish film is a serviceable tribute to Redford, and the iconic place he enjoys in cinema; Redford and Spacek's effortless, easy-going performances are a joy, and the throwback to 70s era film-making techniques (down to the gorgeous old school film-stock) are great fun. If the heist stuff had been left out in favour of more Redford and Spacek, this could have been a winner - Lowery seems to lose confidence during the bank sequences, almost perversely refusing to raise the tension.

"The Old Man and the Gun" is a charming, leisurely paced yarn, a film built around stellar performances and intimate, picturesque moments. Lowery's recreation of the 70s aesthetic is superb, with a distinctly grainy frame and a camera that favours handheld zooms over more static, modern shots. Less spellbinding is the story at the film's core, however. What you see in the trailer, an old man who holds up banks with a gun and a smile, is all you get. Nothing more, nothing less.

Sorry but I'm going to be honest, this film stinks. No other way to put it.

Doing justice to a true story is always a risky proposition. It is impossible to understand the mentality behind someone hell-bent on spending time in prison. Redford is really showing his age in this one and was at times almost unrecognizable. Also, the handling of events was very weak, leaving some of the highest action moments literally left off-screen. It was just an average movie despite its having above average actors.

This is total catnip for me. Relaxed, folksy, character-driven dramedy with some clever touches and a splash of romance. Destined to be one of my go-to comfort food films.

Too quaint for its own good, ultimately. Redford was good, it embraces its simplistic storytelling and filmmaking, but it felt so inconsequential and insubstantial. Musical choices were clearly chosen to further the quaint agenda but I don't know, it felt like an unmemorable TV movie sometimes. I can't say that I hated it but my mind drifted more than I would have liked.

A small-scale but lovely little tale that functions as well as a story about a rad old bank robber as it does a metaphor for Redford’s storied career.

Expected something a little more "coen-esque", got a pretty straightforward, charming little movie instead.

Lowery gets the 70s camera moves and chill atmosphere so right that this stylistic update might just be idiosyncratically his. More than a tribute to cinema, it's a tribute to Redford's blue eyes and his contributions to indie culture over the years (catch that break-out sequence near the end to get it all in one neat package). So an old dog won't learn new tricks and such, but in that also lies an unaccounted-for sadness, and Casey Affleck is just too real for this slowly deflating romp.

The most interesting aspect of this movie for me was exploring what makes Robert Redford, who totally nails the part, so damn charming. His facial muscles are really up for the task. Also I thought he was like 160cm but he man turns out to be 181!

For film fans it's hard to not relax and enjoy a meta-Robert-Redford story. That it's so inoffensive and straightforward prevents it from being legendary, but I don't regret my time with it.

Charming movie. He just can't change. Casey Affleck's character was surprisingly the least interesting---his wife was more intriguing. Great transitions with zooming in/out, circles, etc. Nice atmospheric music. Fav scene: montage of escape attempts.

Redford and Spacek still got it, and Affleck continues to be top tier. Really, nothing all that original, but just some incredibly solid film making. The Screenplay hits all of the right notes. It's the kind of film that will give you a perpetual smile, but won't make you pee your pants from excitement.

It's not a thriller, but an adventure story. The whole cast was amazing and any conversation between Sissy Spacek and Robert Redford was engaging to me. Some beautiful shots here, as well, plus I keep feeling continously impressed by Casey Affleck's work in any movie that he is in. The movie's got a lot of charm and despite the subject, I'd still describe it was a feel good -type of flick. We don't need to hold on to the edges of our seats all the time.

Simple filmmaking and storytelling, though done consistency right with some nifty New Hollywood punctuation at the right times. Redford and Spacek make me feel emotions through some careful relationship building, which make me realise just how much other films fail trying to do the same. A simple delight, and one that can delight at any time.

Both Redford and Eastwood decided to end their career with classy, old school gentlemanliness, believing in old ways. For it turned out pretty well, charming. First half of The Old Man is probably one my favorite halfs ever. Love the passion of the character, elegance of their acts. Imporant messages that we, the young, should probably take note of from time to time. Both movies unique, but from both I expected a tad bit more. Nevertheless, sometimes you forgive little mistakes and just enjoy it

Much like The Mule in that the story just serves as a vehicle for the star cast. Everyone seems to just be enjoying what they are doing, which is where the fun in this movie lies

Feels like another movie undermined by my terrible local cinema (crushed blacks, grain compressed into blur, a sound mix that makes dialogue inaudible over the music) but it also doesn't feel like I missed a whole heck of a lot more than a pleasant tribute to Redford. I know it's not supposed to be an action movie but a little bit of tension wouldn't go astray.

Though mostly quiet and slower moving film, this was a nice last on screen role for Robert Redford. The part called for a charming and polite older man and he was a great fit.

Though there are a few too many twinkles for its own good, it's a sweet little movie. Biggest cognitive dissonance (in a movie full of them): Sissy Spacek being so very taken aback at discovering a gun in his glove compartment. It's (supposed to be) fucking Texas... EVERYONE has guns down there.

It could have made a cute movie, but I really could not understand or sympathize with what was going on inside Tucker's head, which in turn irritated me a lot. By no means would I call it a poorly produced movie, but this was not my movie at all.

Robert Redford banka soyarsa. Yaşlı kurt her gittiği bankadan eli boş dönmüyor. Her ne kadar ağır bir temposu olsa da merakla izlettiriyor. Filmin sonunda soyguncumuz, ben bir hapse gireyim çıkayım demiş. Herkes ellerini kaldırsın. Bu bir soygundur. Soyunun.

The Old Man & The Gun, sürekli arkaplanda çalan müzikleriyle 20. yüzyılın sonlarında geçen bir Western olmaya çalışsa da çok kötü bir film olmakla yetinmiş. Filmde iyi olan tek şey de Robert Redford ve oyunculuğu maalesef, başka bir numarası yok.

This was nice- Lowkey, grainy and shot with what looks like natural lighting. There's not a whole hell of a lot to the story but the performances are wonderful. I mean, yeah- It needed more Danny Glover and Tom Waits, but you can say that about almost anything. Affleck was kind of a nonentity, but I guess he's still keeping his head down. Spacek needs to be in more stuff.

This film is all reference to me. It seems to be more about working through the implications of Redford's cinematic image as good/bad guy than it is about cops and robbers. I'm also struck by Spacek here as an older, wiser version of her Badlands character. Fascinating, for sure. And Tom Waits is magnificent.

Desperately wants you to adore Robert Redford. Instead it's utterly charmless but it might work if you are born before 1935. The final montage is a very nice touch though.

Over a wonderful aesthetic (warm cinematography, clever editing, and cozy jazz), light and leisurely character set-ups (Forrest and Jewel have great banter) set the stage for a fun little plot (Affleck's weary cop is a perfect match for Redford's relaxed con). The final act fails to wrap things up as gracefully, however, thanks to a couple plot snags (why let him leave the bathroom, and why a horse instead of the car?) and Forrest's now irritatingly breezy attitude in the face of adversity.
