The Old Ways

Starts out a little bit boring and it is drawn out in some places, but overall I thought it was refreshing with the myths and the premise. The acting wasn't always that great but the atmosphere made up for it.

While the doubt of what is going on in the beginning is a nice touch, and some of the possession scenes are well done. Unfortunately, "The Old Ways" relies too heavily on a unique cultural perspective to carry the movie without actually developing a compelling story or any genuine scares. Sure, leaning into a little bit of shamanism gives this a fresh kind of flavor, but that will only take you so far.

THE OLD WAYS is a refreshing take on the tried and true exorcism formula that takes our lead characters to a setting and culture that feels much more natural for exorcisms to take place, in Veracruz, Mexico - and it does a beautiful job blending the concepts of mainstream exorcism stories with maybe the idea that this girl is just in the wrong place/wrong time and isn't actually possessed - think about it...how many exorcisms exist in our history - all on misunderstanding? And a witch story! :D
