The movie that taught us that if you want a child, make it yourself. Don't hire a nanny, raise it yourself. And if it shows interest in entering politics...stab it with knives.

The very concept of Jack Torrence spending hours typing out his lunacy all while continuing to interact with his family on a normal level is so terrifying. In my opinion, the opening here with Damien's nanny is on par. It's so unsettling I've creeped people out just telling them about it. Loved David Warner as the emotionless Klingon photographer. There's an entire Twilight Zone episode about his camera. They don't dwell on the mother's fears much but they're still weighty if you consider them.

Extremely good at being creepy, but ironically enough the thing that contributes most to that, the score, is also what consistently lets it down in the biggest scenes. The score goes so frantic at every key plot point that it takes you out of the moment and makes you aware of how absurd the whole film is.

The premise is chilling. Some things never go out of fashion it seems... in this case exploiting, respectively, the scariness of animals and a potentially evil child. The infamous "death by plate of glass" is brilliant. So is the poor guy's realization, previous to the fact, that he'll die soon. So although it has dated somewhat unflatteringly, I still find it an effectively slowburning horror classic.

Very good movie I prefer this over
 The Exorcist
It’s not like a lot of horror where you get a lot of blood and gore
More like things happen that  could be explained away as freak accidents
My favorite death when lightning strikes and causes the pole to go through the priest’s body
Probably more of a personal preference
But I like how they use close up shots on people's eyes to indicate when something bad is  about to happen
bA very enjoyable movie and a good introduction for young

Decent enough but dated. Gregory Peck delivers his trademark "sittin' on a corn cob" performance and Lee Remick is...Lee Remick. Nothing too outstanding, but "The Omen" is influential in showing movies don't need plotting and dialogue, just death scenes.

This is a ho-hum entry in the satanic horror genre. It fails to interest or frighten me very much. There are, however, some fine performances by a cast of familiar British performers: Billie Whitelaw's Mrs. Blaylock is the standout performance of the film. Patrick Troughton is memorable as the priest, and David Warner always shines. In spite of this, it will stay lost in the shuffle.

The definite Godfather of the 'Final Destination' franchise, the insistence of keeping the horror to 'circumstantial' events works to it's advantage. It's dated, that much is for sure, but there are some pretty groovy shots in there. And there's something cool about the 70s editing - be it images or sound. Also, casting the epitome of decency, Peck, is a master stroke, although this is far from his best performance. But enough out of me. It's a classic, dammit man! Watch it!

A horror masterpiece! Very entertaining, cynical and the score is chilling! A stunning film that relies on the atmosphere and thrills more than gore, which horror films rarely do today. Extra points for that awesome decapitation scene!

One of the scariest, most disturbing movies I’ve seen in a long time. Some of the kills seem a bit overdramatized at this point, but that’s really the only slightly negative thing I think I have against. The tone and nature of the movie just disturbed me to no end, me being a man of faith myself. It’s actually really well made and acted too though. All of the animals scenes were surprisingly scary, and I did genuinely like the character and mystery unfolding. Great film, probably won’t rewatch.

This isn't a jump cut kind of movie. It's full of tension and intrigue, with the atmosphere ramping both up and essentially serving as a cast member. It's a bit dated, similarly to Rosemary's baby, but the core of it is still solid.

Not necessarily frightening, as much as it is tense and atmospheric. It just builds suspense through inaction, just waiting for the next payoff; the death scenes are at once both shocking and cathartic. They, however, don't come close to the feeling Damien's final smile delivers, putting the icing on an enjoyable, dark (if occasionally overdone) horror film.

Some dated aspects and uneven performances don't detract too heavily from what is otherwise an effective studio horror. Donnor creates a rather unsettling atmosphere, and he is aided immeasurably by Goldsmith's now iconic score, which is still unnerving today. It's a shame that it fails to delve deeper into the psychological conflicts of Peck's character, but there are several strong scenes, including a memorable suicide and decapitation, and Whitelaw is creepy as the demonic nanny.

An unquestionably seminal horror premise, but its iconic status has deflated its own impact due to countless parodies and homages. I found the whole movie almost strangely hilarious, especially the overblown "demonic choir" score. If you're looking for religious horror, I'd recommend the Exorcist instead; I found it much more grounded and compelling than this.

The weakest of the "imagine if you had a kid and it turned out evil" pseudo-religious Big Three, but not by a long distance (ROSEMARY'S BABY and THE EXORCIST are both rather overrated). The first death scene is the most effective, unfortunately, but at least events continue to move at a brisk pace. Probably the tricycle scene is a conscious or unconscious inspiration for Danny riding around the Overlook, but the gap in quality from this film to that one four years later is massive.

It doesn't rely on any cheap scares. Instead it's pretty subtle (the score is pretty much perfect), relying on atmosphere more than thrills. Harvey Stephens's physical performance is impressive, much moreso than you'd expect from any other child actor.

Some great directing and an awesome score, the whole movie sets a really dark and ominous tone from the very start. Unfortunately the entire cast is fairly stiff in their acting, which causes some problems in the "suspension of disbelief" category. Could have been done better, but it's still an excellent horror flick.

The Omen is a classic. It is the perfect mix of horror, mystery, and suspense. The creepiness that exudes this film is palpable and that is what makes it such a great horror movie. While there are some gross parts with blood and a bit of gore, I really respect that the film makers were able to keep things pretty clean while telling a very horrifying story. This is a film that can be watched over and over again and it will always be enjoyable. The acting and cinematography are stellar as well.

Almost classic horror is almost cute by today's standards, but still there's much to admire in Donner's first important film. Creative killings get the top honors as well as Gregory Peck and Jerry Goldsmith's crazy score, but other elements remain muffled and not as effective; Harvey Stephens looks like a devilish cherub but he's hardly threatening and dogs are just not scary. Obviously, this is much, much better than the remake, though.

A pretty decent thriller about the Anti-Christ. I loved some of the shots in this film, the fishbowl slowly smashing into the ground is very iconic. I just wish this was a little more entertaining. The movie really moves at a slow pace, yes, there is a good creepy ambiance to the film but it can get a little tiresome how slow things happen in this. Peck is pretty good, I really liked Warner. The boy is thoroughly unsettling. This was my 666th review, I thought it was only fitting to see this.

Yes the idea that your kid might be the Antichrist is creepy enough to hang a horror movie on. However if you won't find that or random quotes from the book of revelations super-scary, there's very little horror involved here until the very end. I found it a quite slow and ill-structured piece of storytelling but not without a certain creepy charm. The plot is a bit thin and in the end unsatisfying. Good effects & stunts and strong performances make it very watchable though.

I love the direction in this movie. So many small moments and details are captured that make everything that much scarier. In particular, when Damien's first nanny hangs herself, her body smashes through a large window behind her. The inclusion of that detail is one of the most brilliant moments I've seen in horror. It adds noise and destruction to what would otherwise be a quiet death. She literally damages the home, perfect foreshadowing for what Damien will do.

not perfect by any means, but one of the better horror films i've seen. it is dated in some ways - the music is excessive, and peck's acting feels melodramatic, but i think the film benefited from not relying too much on special effects (as the exorcist had done) because it can, even now, strike some semblance of fear in its audience. there were logical plot-holes and not everything was justified as thoroughly as it could have been, but in the end, it definitely created the effect it set out to.

Imaginative set pieces and a wonderful score make this film something special. A little dated now, and a film that today appears ponderous, simply because most directors have lost either the art, or the patience, to build tension through "inaction" ( other than the likes of Sergio Leone ! ) but nevertheless a truely gripping and believable portrayal of evil and Importantly, a child actor that is perfectly believeable. A film with more "memorable" deaths in it than probably any other.

Pretty interesting as a mystery/thriller and a bit underwhelming as a horror movie (at least in the modern age). Some of the horror gets taken away when the most famous scene is well known and the fact that there are sequels hurts the suspenseful ending. The way the horror genre builds on itself and ruthlessly rips itself off means tropes become codified so quickly that older films - even innovative ones - can feel cliched and become more labours of love to watch than anything else. But, while I couldn't find it scary, this was still pretty good! Directed with some style, well-acted, and the priest impalement is still pretty damn badass.

Bar some problems with the writing, this does stand out as a great mix of schlock horror and a serious drama. On this viewing I pretended Damien was completely innocent and that everything bad that happens was coincidence or caused by crazed fanatics. It works, a compliment to a film which balances two different aspects together and is still more subtle than other horror movies.

Donner's direction is way too serious and classical to really dive into the material's exploitative, pulpy possibilities, despite at least three really remarkable scenes -- nanny's suicide, the baboon attack at the zoo and the photographer's decapitation. It starts pretty well, in that 70s typical eerie vibe, but as soon as Peck teams up with Warner and the two engage in a procedural investigation of biblical evidence, the film abandons the kid and just gets boring. Nice finale, though.

Top badass moment? This weird marketing campaign for red wine features Doctor Who (pimped out with a huge cross) continually hassling Gregory Peck to drink the Blood of Christ. I've not seen that on sale in Tesco. So the Antichrist (and what stressed parent hasn’t thought that of their offspring at least once), rides his tricycle without due care, resulting in the death of four goldfish; whilst the AntiMaryPoppins gets him a puppy. 1 decapitation (and it’s a goodie), no cats or chainsaws.

Solid chiller that taps into religious and occult themes, similar to The Exorcist and Rosemary's Baby. There's a spooky, ominous atmosphere, partly due to the subject, but also because of the creepy locations and the fantastically dramatic music by Jerry Goldsmith. Some memorable scenes, including the safari park freak-out and a number of gruesome deaths. Starts to lose a bit of steam towards the end, but is certainly one of the better horror films of the period.
