Chilling and eerie, this supernatural tale of good versus evil coils around twin brothers living with their grandmother in a sleepy rural area during the summer of 1935. After his grandmother encourages Niles to develop what seem to be psychic gifts, Niles starts to suspect that his twin may be involved in recent fatal accidents. Surprising twist after twist heightens the sense that a horrifying climax lurks at the edge of the viewer's vision--and the stark finale will have suspense and thriller (Yahoo! Movies)

Occasionally overburdened with needless symbolism and rather obvious in its mystery (the novel worked better here) but boosted by its pristine photography, rich 1930s period detail, fine cast, and lovely Jerry Goldsmith score.

This movie disguises itself as a "boy's summer in 1930s" kind of flick, which then begins to turn into an increasing nightmare of murder, secrets and true horror. There's NOTHING supernatural going-on in this movie, by the way. Beautifully filmed, superbly acted, close adaptation of Tom Tryon Best-Selling Novel. A must-see!

This carefully directed psychological thriller could be argued as too picturesque, too homesick, for a horror film. But Mulligan's colors are lush, intense and gloomy, cocoa browns and bloody crimsons. They're actually wicked and ominous. And the farm isn't viewed with a restful melancholy, but a ghostly recollection.

Viewed October 23, 2021. Mulligan's key tactic as a filmmaker is his subjective storytelling style, employing long sweeping takes to orient the viewer into a space as it is perceived by his protagonists. This technique translates extremely well to an eerie horror movie where the perception of reality itself is always shifting, and it also helps to make the movie's emotional arc ring much louder.

This doesn't always work and I think it goes on for too long but I found the actual story to be pretty chilling.

This isn't formulaic mainstream pseudo-scare fare in an _Audrey Rose_ vein but a genuinely creepy thriller that sneaks up on the viewer.

Quite a strong entry in the "horrible little bastard" genre. The start reminded me a bit of those public safety films they showed us in school, before heading off in a number of interesting directions; kept me guessing, anyway. The performances are fine, and the setting feels like it should be idyllic, creating an odd dynamic with the developing unpleasant events. Was actually taken aback by a couple of moments, which is rare these days. Creepy and unsettling - surprised it isn't better known.
