you ever wonder if there’s some weird alternate universe out there where Tom Cruise and Ralph Macchio had each other’s fame level/career trajectory and Macchio was still like a mega A-list movie star in huge action movies and stuff in the 2010s and Cruise was like a “hey I remember that kid from the 80s” novelty

I, what? What the hell is with the cast? My eyes nearly popped outta my head when the credits started rolling, because that's a pretty massive collection of 'names'--I'd only recognized the Karate Kid! I also didn't realize this was a Francis Ford Coppolo film until logging on here (I figured it was a "presented by..." type deal), and that has me scratching my head, because it sure wasn't masterfully put together. Interesting structure, though, and has way more heart than I thought it'd have.

the other half of Rumble Fish" is not as poetic and profound a movie, but it is a pleasure to watch. This is Coppola stretching out of the Epic scale of his other movies. A nice movie, that is still a hidden gem in his ouvre.

Nice coming of age movie, a lot of young actors who went on to big things. Suffers a little for having too much plot for what should be a character driven piece, but that probably comes from being based on a book.

This film is such a nostalgic film for me, from the first time of watching as a school project in my teens, I immediately fell in love with the story. Each character has been developed well in accordance with the book and this was the best film in my opinion to have come from the Brat pack. This film tugs at your emotions and really draws you in. It's one of those that can be watched over and over and is a timeless piece.

Most people here have inferred as much, but the enjoyment of this film is burdened by its frequent use as the ultimate "get-out-of-teaching-free-card" used by middle school teachers (after already tormenting you with reading the mediocre source material). Even less points because it's a Coppola, and he should know better.

Look at the cast! This was before many of them were famous, but Coppola manages to make a decent movie out of this book. I wasn't a big fan of the book, and the movie was about on the same level. This was around the time that Coppola took a downturn.

It's a bit of a shocker that whis cheesy, over-melodramatic coming-of-age film is directed by someone who made a fucking masterpiece of cinema 4 years earlier. Acting is noticably bad, but it's fun to watch all these actors before they got famous. At some point I stopped caring about the plot and started enjoying rockabilly soundtrack. "Stay gold, Ponyboy. Stay gold. "

Without the narrative voice of the novel, you'll realize that there isn't much there; I haven't seen the extended "complete novel" cut, but it sounds like an improvement -- the theatrical cut feels truncated, zipping from one plot point to the next as if it's a pressed-for-time adaptation of something more than a middle-school level novel.

With material like this, I could tell that it was based on someone else's material. The Outsiders may be aimed more towards the teens (I watched this in school), but that doesn't prevent the young cast from actually act in some spots. The script is alright, but you do have your typical direction from Coppola and I think Dillon did an alright job.

Special Edition: One of Coppola's ambitious misses is difficult to engage with, because it's hard to decipher why he chooses to tell this story in such a hyper-stylised way - the allusions both visual and literal to GWTW suggests a want to tell this story in an old-time "epic" scope, but it still presents as low-key and domestic, making some of the dramatic sun dappled shots look clumsy and goofy (and Stevie Wonder's theme should have been scrapped). Cast of future stars maintain some interest.

It's a pretty damn interesting movie for its time and I like the way it starts out appearing like it's this usual macho cool kids movie, but there's actually a lot of sentiment in the story between the boys. A lot of interesting actors here in minor roles before their rise to fame not too many years later. It kept me engaged, but acting and plot-wise it's not always super strong. I can see why it has reached a cult status, though. There's a lot of nostalgia here.

Some nice cross-dissolves here and there, and this certainly feels like an earnest attempt at evoking a particular era that this filmmaker feels strongly about. It succeeds in that regard, woo-hoo, but the story just isn't interesting or even epic enough, doesn't muse on a whole lot going on at the time, and there's some grating carelessness (I believe one of the main characters towards the end gets killed to goofy music and then quickly forgotten about).

This is very much an old fashioned teenage coming of age type film, with a slight feel of James Dean about it, ala Rebel Without A Cause. It also has the feel of a 1950s film, with a soundtrack featuring older artists incl. Elvis. It's somewhat stylish too and of course its relevant in so far as the use of a knife making me think of the current epidemic of knife crime amongst teenagers (sadly). As the film continued, I became more and more keen on the upbeat instrumental based soundtrack.

(Theatrical cut): The Outsiders is much closer to an Old Hollywood film than a typical 80's teen drama, which initially seems strange given its era defining cast. It's certainly a romantic view of youth, but it's not romanticised, as others have incorrectly noted, at least no moreso than films like Rebel Without a Cause. Coppola Snr's lush score adds a welcome melancholy tinge to the picturesque imagery, but the form chosen by Coppola Jnr doesn't express youth angst as vividly as Rumble Fish.

How is it that the director of The Godfather turned out this over-earnest, and too-frequently-twinkly, sappy piece of crap?? And that score... mushy and "symphonic", it wells up at EVERY moment that could be perceived as emotional (if you aren't too busy rolling your eyes). It all feels much more like a "dramatic" '70's television show. Patrick Swayze is the only one to emerge relatively unscathed from this morass.

This feels like it did to greaser movies what Star Wars did for science fiction: it made them feel lived-in and realistic, covered in dirt and grime like the setting should be. Coppola does a decent job behind the camera, and the young cast does well in front of it. I felt like there was a lack of focus in the script and the pacing felt a bit uneven in the second act, but The Outsiders is a fun little teen movie that packs more of an emotional punch than it has a right to.

I think the nostalgia factor is strong with this one, because the books were coming-of-age stories of my generation. I had nothing in common with these guys, though. It seems that the short running time doesn't do justice to all of their stories. Much more fun now to recognize all the stars (and wonder about the could-have-beens).

1983 was a bad year for Francis Ford Coppola. I preferred this to Rumble Fish, but not by much. This movie had some of the most wooden, terrible acting I've ever seen. I mean, it's sad when Patrick Swayze is the strongest part of the movie. Story was bad and it was really cheesy. Still, it's watchable but I don't know what the point of it was. It's difficult to imagine a more oddly misguided move than Coppola's rescoring of this film. He's made a big melodrama with highly pitched emotional sequences, and he's dropped twangy guitar music under them. At best, it sabotages the emotions of the scene. At worst, it's unintentionally funny.

This is extremely overwrought, almost comically so or to the point of a parody of the genre at this point, but it's nonetheless very entertaining and features all sorts of people who went onto big things. Francis Ford Coppola did something out of his norm here and it failed. The movie is short giving little breathing room, yet little actually happens and its hard to become attached to the characters. The movie is a decent showing of what the 80s thought the 60s were and a nice introduction to Emilio Estevez and Tom Cruise, but on the whole I didn't like it.

The story and characters here definitely have their youthful charm, with the film's grimy aesthetic and dark plot twists adding some grit. Technically, however, the film is hit or miss. Dialogue delivery (and there's a lot of it) is suspect and causes some scenes to really drag, and the rollicking soundtrack, while at times enjoyable, at others blares on through conversations and contrasts with what feels like should be somber moments. An engaging story that could have been presented better.
