I thought this was outstanding. Narratively simple - at just over an hour it's a rare film that I'd argue follows a two-act structure rather than three - but morally complex, speaking to themes about mob mentality that resonate across the decades. There's real darkness and power here, with interesting camera work and a fantastic performance by Henry Fonda - and that's even before the gut-punch plot twist that comes in at the end and recontextualizes everything.

Is this the first anti-Western? It subverts common tropes to become remarkably complex and mature compared to its contemporaries in the genre. A morality tale about lynching probably was already a little dated by the 40s, but as critique on the emphasis put on vigiliantism within the Western genre as well as the contemporary mob mentality within Fascist Europe, it's still pretty relevant. Engaging movie that's weighed down slightly by being visually uninteresting and a tad on the slow side.

It starts a bit off, and I have no idea why the wife was really a thing in the film - but once what the movie wanted to do really appears, it's an entirely different film. The anti-western and becomes the Western version of 12 Angry Men, a surprisingly much heavier version of it.
